Not sure how to post a picture. The only one I found was on Ebay. I put in the model: Gateway ML6720. It shows the fan and heat sink as a unit. I'll try to find just the fan, or any fan. Thanks.

Can the fan be oiled? If so, what would I use? I checked with one shop yesterday and they will take a look at it, but didn't sound like they would even touch attempting a repair. Said they might be able to clean out any dust (which has already been done) and might be able to oil it. They couldn't find a replacement part either. I'll ask them about using a generic fan. Is is possible that the fan and heat sink are soldered together or something?

Gateway referred me to mundocorp.com. Mundo sells Gateway parts, but they don't have this part. I found a repair shop locally that said they can get the part (probably the one on ebay) and will replace it. They will warranty their work and the part for 30 days. Thanks for your help!

The best thing you can do is replace the fan itself with a like kind of shape and size. I usually do this by going to a computer store with the old fan and matching it up with the ones they have in stock, or measure the size in milimeters and buy one on line. The fan is held on by 4 screws and it is much easier than trying to remove the heat-sink and take the chance of damaging the motherboard. You can just screw the new fan to the old heat-sink and you are done, plug it in and insure the fan is blowing in the right direction and you are done. Good Luck, RAC

I see your problem, you have a liquid type cooling system on the motherboard. You will need to be very carefull when changing it out. I have never worked with liquid cooling before and have tried to stay away from it. Liquid and electronics don't mix. I never trusted them. Call me old school, I have stuck to the old style of fan and heatsink. I am not sure if the fan is even removable in your system without disturbing the rest of the assembly. Good Luck, RAC

Sorry about this, you hve a laptop which I do not deal with. Your question was listed under PC desktops, so I assumed you had a desktop PC not a laptop. You could possibly buy the whole assembly and remove the fan if possible and use it to replace the one in the notebook if it is not an intrigal part of the assembly. Good Luck, RAC

One almost never has to replace the heatsink. The fan typically is screwed or clipped to the heatsink and can be removed and replaced by itself. The fan is a generic part available anywhere, just get one the same diameter. If you take your fan and heatsink with you the odds are good someone at the place you buy it can put the new one on in a few seconds. The tricky part is removing the heatsink from the motherboard, sometimes those clips are very difficult to remove without the right tools.

If you can post a picture of your fan & heatsink I can tell you exactly how to replace it.

There is no liquid cooling on this computer. Think about it, where would the cooling tower go on a laptop? The closest you could get on a laptop is a heat pipe, which is all self contained and changed the same way as a regular air-cooled setup.

It can be oiled, but that will not solve your problem long-term. These fans are oilless and need to be replaced when they start acting up. I saw the photo you were talking about on Ebay, it looks like that case can be opened and just the fan replaced even if you can't get the whole assembly. Gateway refuses to sell you the part?

Laptop capacitor

Hi Melissa,
The best i could find was on ebay.
Here's the link for the Fan
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Gateway-NV53A53U-NV53A63U-NV53A51U-NV53A50U-CPU-Cooling-Heatsink-Fan-7784-/281088859805?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4172339e9d

And without telling me the type, size and rating of the Capacitor i think the best place you could find it is at Radio Shack or another store like it.

If you feel comfortable removing and replacing the entire Motherboard, here is a link on ebay for a replacement Motherboard.

Hope this helps!
Thanks and please rate;)

Gateway ML6720 has a problem with cpu fan

Did you replace it with the correct fan? Did you put a fresh coat of Thermal Paste under the CPU and heat sink? If not, that could be your problem.

Your computer is shutting down due to overheating. Since the fan is making noise it is not working or cooling correctly either because it has lint or debris interfearing with the fan blades, ot the fan bearing is going out. To determine this you need to access the fan and clear it of any blockage. You will need to remove the keyboard to access it. Not all Gateway models are the same but once under the keyboard you should be able to work with it. CLICK HERE for keyboard removal instructions. If you find lint or dust blocking the fan exhaust at the heatsink and can clear that out your laptop will run much cooler and should solve your problem. If the trouble is with the fan itself you can still find a replacement and be able to swap it out.

(if the removal of the fan requires removal of the heatsink assembly you will also need to apply new thermal compound between the CPU and heatsink after cleaning the old compound off with rubbing alcohol.)

Laptop shuts down on its own constantly. Have had for two years but only used for about a year because of problems. Gateway M series AMD Turion processor 64 2 gb 2 mg 32 bit operating

If heatsink is very hot then apply thermal grease between the processor and the heatsink or you can test if it's cooling problem by cooling with an external, powerful cooler.

Hello so I have a gateway labtop model ml6720 and my computer keeps saying Cooling fan error so im looking for an affordable solution to the problem any suggestions?

The most affordable is to take it to a reputable repair person or check my website www.micromendllc.com. The price of the fan is cheap but in most cases to replace this fan requires a complete laptop strip down. Might as well get it down right the first time.

Y Daughter Has a gateway laptop model ML6720 which the fan has been seemingly noisy but I just noticed I don't think it is going on .What should I do and what harm can be done

This is the CPU cooling fan.
Take it to a repair shop. Laptops cannot been worked on easily.
Without the cooling fan, the CPU will eventually die and make take the hard drive with it.

I need to know which fan i need for my pc

This heatsink & fan assembly is the replacement for the Gateway 500SE & E-machine systems.
http://www.skyline-eng.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=5564
Under the window: Search by Machine click the dropdown menue & choose as follows.
Type: Gateway Desktop Parts
Series: 500
Model: Gateway 500SE Parts
Than click submit.
Click, Cooling Fan.
More socket 478 CPU fans.

Most CPU fans come with the heatsink. Try not to buy a fan that comes with a grill over it. That slows the fan down & makes the fan work harder.

Good luck!
