Question about Whirlpool 21.0 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator with IceMagic Plus Ice Maker

1 Answer

About 2 weeks ago, my Samsung RFG298HD refrigerator began making a cooing sound. Sometimes I can barely hear it, but at other times, it is quite loud. I have contacted Samsung who advises that as the one year warranty expired four weeks ago, (it is 13 months old), I will have to pay for a repairman. Any suggestions?

SOURCE: Ice maker stopped working

are the "fingers" of the icemaker pointed toward you and slightly up? if not the icemaker is internally broken . is the red light to the right blinking twice and then a one second pause? if not the emmitter is broken. is the black hose coming from the ceiling blocked with ice ? if so the water vave is broken allowing water to seep in hose and freeze. hope this helps.

pull fridge out and listen if noise is comming from compressor or not. If not, then your evaporator fan is comming into contact with the ice from the evap.coil. Basically give unit a good overnight defrost with doors open as the insulation on this fridge is good

SOURCE: Whirlpool model ED5FHAXSLOO refrig 3 years old very noisy

If it is cooing fine, then the noise is probably your evaporator fan (the one inside your freezer). This can be cause by one of several things. The motor on this fan may be going bad, or, more likely, you may have a build up of ice around the blades that are touching the fan. This may be caused by a defrost circuit that has gone bad, or, the freezer may have been open alot lately and there is an excess of frost that hasn't melted away yet. If you can, manually defrost the freezer and see if it goes away. If it doesn't, it's probably the fan motor. If it does, and then comes back, it's probably the defrost circuit. Hope this helps!

SOURCE: 13 month frig quit running

Here is what I would do:
I would check to see if the compressor and condenser fan motor is running.cc8d7bd.jpg If the compressor was hot to the touch that would give me a clue.
That would tell me the relay is stuck in start mode causing the compressor to get hot and quit.c6b5f66.jpg I would remove the relay and put my HS410 start pack to see if the compressor comes on and I would check if it was over amping. The amp draw should be around 1 amp. If it is running 7 or 8 amps then the compressor is shot will over heat and die.b261986.jpg The fan motor by the compressor should run when the compressor does. So if the compressor is running but not the fan then you need to look at buying a fan motor. If the fan is running but the compressor is not then you need to buy a relay. If all of that is ok I would next listen for the fan motor blowing in the freezer, no fan no cool. Lots of times fans will make a racket if ice begins to build in the evaporator.c4cad85.jpg They will get louder and louder. Then the ice will build to the point the fan won't blow.
I would need to check for a bad defrost heater or terminator if that is the case. Do this test: unplug the ice box and let it sit for 3 or 4 days till it completely thaws out. Then plug it back in. If it begins to work ok then you KNOW you have a defrost problem. Replacing the defrost thermostat and heater is not very difficult, you still need to let it thaw out to do it. Even if you called me out there and I said it was a defrost problem I would still have to leave and come back 3 days later. If you suspect it is the defrost then go ahead and clean out the ice box and let er sit for 3 days. Then until you can fix it just unplug it once a week like grandma did back in the 40s before auto defrost. That's all the smart pills I have. Post a model and I could be a bit more specific because you could have adc0c1e867.jpg or a timer a control board instead of a mercury based control and in that case their is much more to check. For instance if you had an old schoo timer,8c078f4.jpg it might be stuck in defrost. It might just take moving that timer screw forward to get it unstuck. Don't know until I see a model number. I have had the GE top frezer a little over 2 months...Afew weeks ago I noticed a noise starting , a kind of weird noise....(its not the ice maker....I turned that off a week ago and it still does it....the...

Sounds like the defrost timer doing its job but with loud efforts. GE is known for its different sounds some clanks to clicks to popping. Thank God for good hearing but curse GE for its poor noise reduction efforts. This is why GE is cheaper than its other competitors. They cut corners welcome to the world of GE. BB

There might be a problem with the LCD of the phone, you need to have it checked with a technician. I'm not sure if the phone got damaged due to direct heat of sun light. The phone's LCD is also sensitive and can only take mild heat. Might as well take it to a local techinician and have them evaluate the phone's LCD for you.

Ice maker stopped dropping ice or even making ice.

Try using a hair dryer to thaw out the rubber tubing leading to the ice tray. On mine, I opened up the front door to the icemaker and found the rubber tubing leading in. I squeazed it, it felt frozen, so I applied heat. Water began dripping out, the area thawed, and I had ice again within a short period of time.

Smell coming from the refrigerator

I would assume you have a bad self defrosting motor. This motor generally is used to cycle heat at certain points to keep the unit from allowing the condansation from freezing inside the refridg. I am assuning the smell is this motor heating up. Should the motor quit, it is normally not a fire hazard but should be taken care of. You'll need to remove the back panel of the refridg and you'll see the minuture motor and probably hear is making noise. Always be sure to unplug the refridg before opening the back panel or any service to prevent shock. Good luck

Samsung Fridge side by side

It sounds like you have a defrost problem. This will either be the defrost heaters the defrost thermostat or defrost timer. In order to check the heater if you are competent enough you can check that you have resistance across the heater. Alternatively you can rotate the timer (normally in the fridge section abov the thermostat control) around to a defrost cycle (you will normally hear a click) and check to see if the defrost heater kicks in. Please note the cabinet has to be cold in order for the heaters to work. The defrost sensor should also have zero resistance across the terminals when the coil is cold. Please do no attempt the above unless you are practically skilled. A good fridge guy should be able to quickly identify the problem and remedy it. Defrost heaters are generally the first part to fail. Hope this is of some help.
