I bought an Iomega external hardrive and saved all my things from my previous job on it. Now, I am opening everything at my new job and although I can open it, I can not saved or edit or delete anything. Its not checked read only or anything in properties but still its telling me I dont have rights to change anything.

It is recognized and I can open all the documents inside. I can edit them and save them as something else but can not edit & save the document under the original name or delete it.

The IT department here is non-existent so there are no restrictions.

    Any other ideas???

It is both XP, yes. Also, you are correct in assuming I did not load any software. Only the copy/paste.

It just won't allow me to delete or save as the same title as is already there.

i think i might have to go back to the old computer and grant everyone full rights. do you think so? it seems that it's identifying me as a user and i dont have full control.

When you open My Computer is this new external drive recognized? Does it happen to say Disconnected Drive?

At work, does your IT department restrict you from adding any perripherial devices to your computer?

If this does not help, please let me know.

Dumb question.. The same operating system is on both computers right? One isn't using Windows XP and the other Vista right?

I am also assuming you simply plugged in the external device and let Windows handle the rest or did you load some software from Iomega on the external drive?

In getting all the data from your old computer at your former job to the external can I assume you simply highlighted and copied the files over to the drive or simply moved them over to the drive and then disconnected the external drive, changed jobs and then when you got to the new job the files could not be saved back to the original file when you opened them and made changes. It simply created a new file with an extension for example the original Word Document A.doc gets opened and saved back as Document A (2).doc?

Just curious. What kid of files are we talking about? Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Publisher or are we talking proprietary programs Were the old files Microsoft Word 2003 for example and the program on your new computer Microsoft Word 2007?

Your problem is unusual although I know it is a real problem you are experiencing and I feel we are simply missing something obvious.

The only thing else that comes to mind is to check the folder properties for the folder that holds all your files has a restriction on it that allows for a read only although you said above that there are no restrictions in the properties or the attributes.

That would be the only thing I believe that is holding you up. I am sorry I should have clarified that I was referring to the original file settings in place back at the old computer. That really is the only thing it could be because it appears you've done everything else correctly. Sorry I couldn't help more

I'm no longer able to retrieve data from external hardrive. Any attempt at copying and pasting from the Iomega to any of my pcs and laptops fails; only the icons themselves are pasted, no actual data. Also...

Iomega will charge you to recover thier drives, but if you open the Iomega case you will find a Seagate drive inside, Most likely a barracuda, Just go to Download Seagate DiskWizard or other free tools and follow the simple instructions to repair, Format, and or save the data on this drive..
Feel free to open the iomega case and you will find that it is a SeaGate drive, and unlike iomega
there tools r free and fully opperationel.

"I spent hours trying to figure this drive out and opend it up and found out today. but be ready to wait for the drive to be ready to use again. It is taking 4 hrs to repartition and format the drive.
I hope this works for u as it has for me.

No picture, just black screen.

I had this problem!

If the problem your having is caused by the same thing mine was then this is how to fix it ...
1. Buy a External drive case like this one..
2. Remove your ps3 hardrive by taking of the cover on the side and removing the blue screw, then remove the tray from around the hardrive.
3. Place the hardrive in the external case.
4 Plug usb external case into computer, goto my computer then right click ps3 hardrive that will now show up.
5. Right click the drive and click format
6. After formating put the drive back into the ps3 and the ps3 will then come up with a message follow the instructions... and your ps3 will now work again.
(by doing this you will lose all your ps3 saves, music and videos and so on it will be like resetting your ps3 to when you bought it.)

Hope solves your problem!

Itunes messed up my external hardrive

I doubt that iTunes really moved/reorganized files on your computer.

iTunest may have created its own "Table Of Contents", presenting a "view" of all your files.

Open "My Computer" and open your external hard-drive.
The files should be in "your" order.

Open "My Documents". Open "My Music".
The files should be in "your" order.

If iTunes really did "reorganize" your files, there's no way to "go back", because "Windows System Restore" does not automatically created time-stamped backups of your 'My Documents' folder (nor of any external disk-drive -- where would it put that much data???).

Unable to install IOMEGA HDD on Vista Home Premium

Vista may require drivers that are not preinstalled. If the drive clearly works on one machine, but not another, its safe to pressume its not the drive. On the VISTA machine, go to the Iomega site and download the driver for vista or usb or whatnot.
