Question about IBM ThinkPad 600E 2645 Notebook

1 Answer

Thinkpad 600E Hi, My daughters laptop ( Thinkpad 600E ) starts up ok and displays the thinkpad logo but It wont start up windows. It displays a very simple graphic that looks like a floppy disk and is indicating that it should be put in a drive. Then across the bottom of the screen are all the 'F' keys and it is indicating to press 'F1'. When I do this the screen goes blank and then displays two codes and nothing else, following this the laptop just beeps and has to be switched off. The codes are: 19990301 and 19990305. Please help she needs this for her course work. Many thanks Moonbeam X

Does that mean I have to buy a new hard drive? If I do, do I just unscrew the old one and put in the new one or is there more to it than that? I'm a pooter novice.

IBM Thinkpad error code 19990301 is a Hard-Disk sector problem. Basically your hard-drive is faulty and you need to replace it. This is why it wont boot; because the area of the hard-drive that stores data is damaged.

Yes you take the old one out and put the new one in BUT :)

You also need to install the operating system which you hopefully had on CD when you purchased the laptop!

Hand-me-down IBM Thinkpad 600E 2645 has blinking LCD video XP O/S

This sounds to me like either your flourescent lighting tube is beginning to go bad ,,, or the inverter is going bad ... or even both. :-)

The cheapest and easiest solution for you is to simply replace the LCD screen (replacing the inverter or the tube are actually a bit cheaper, but not quite as easy to do - most computer repair centers will try to talk you into a new screen anyway). This is actually very simple for either you or someone you know who is an avid "do-it-yourselfer". IBM makes ity very easy. You will find easy, detailed instructions in the ThinkPad 600/600E (2645) Hardware Maintenance Manual, IBM S10L-9619-03 June 1999 available for FREE downloading in .pdf format on IBMs website. Follow this link to some really sweet deals on LCD screens for your 600e on eBay for under $35.00.

Remember you can always connect an external monitor to your ThinkPad until your new screen arrives if you have one. The manual should also give you instructions to change out the tube if you wish to save a few more bucks and try that route. Hope this will FIX-YA! Please leave your feedback and let me know!

Starting ibm 600e

Hi there.
Errors 161, 192, 163.
All three of these errors are connected to the back up battery.
To resolve this problem:
1. open memory flap on base of laptop (small philips screwdriver required)
2. find the small connector with 1 black & 1 red wire coming from it.
3. disconnect above connector and gently pull the Red&black wires. The backup battery should just pull out from under the casing.
4. get replacement battery. Either
a. call IBM spares (07900 247 490 in UK) and ask for FRU:
02K6502. UK price is about £8 + £15 delivery + VAT.
b. if comfortable with soldering iron: Carefully open the packaging on the backup battery using a sharp knife.
Remove the solder tags from the battery (these are spot welded so need to be cut/broken off). Buy a new CR2025 battery from any computer shop, jeweler, or camera shop.
Using electrical tape, insulate all round edge of battery
Solder the leads onto the new battery - note polarity. Red wire to +, black wire to -.
Using more insulating tape, wrap battery so that all exposed metal is covered.
5. put new battery into laptop (reverse steps 1-3)
6. start up computer, error 192 has gone, but still shows 161, 163. Select OK.
7. reset date & time, and OK
8. when screen shows 'O / I' restart laptop using on/off switch at side.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

IRe: IBM 600E

Hi, sorry I was out last night.
Errors 00161/00163/00173 mean you need to replace the CMOS/BIOS battery and update the time, date etc, like you did.. and Error 00301 means a keyboard error. Just press CtrlAltDel past this.. or try using an external PS-2 keyboard..

So, when you startup and then get to the errors, just press CtrlAltDel to restart, then tap F1 to enter the Advanced Settings and try to load Windows in Safe Mode, and let it do a Scan Disk.

It's possible that the machine won't be able to load any hardware drivers for the machine because the CMOS information might have been corrupted due to the flat battery, but try and boot into Safe Mode anyway and see how you get on.

This is a really old machine but still has driver and troubleshooting support at the Lenovo website, and it might be fun and interesting to resurrect..

On pages 109 and 115of the attached pdf file (actual pages 103 and 109), the Li-Ion batterypack part number should read 12P4064 replaces 02K7018.

This is the Setup Guide for the thinkpad 600.

Of course, it may very well load Windows fine after a new battery and a scandisk and you'll find it has Windows 2000 on it, so maybe I'm jumping the gun with the Win98 stuff there, but let me kow how you get on..

Oh by the way, if we are going to be using a different Solution thread this time, can you go back to the other page and rate it as Fixya! so that they can take it off the system? It saves the unrated pages filling up the servers..

Thinkpad 600E

Error 19990301 on a Thinkpad 600 usually indicates that the hard drive is not properly connected, and error code 19990305 signifies "no bootable device". So, it's the hard drive.

First of all, I would try removing and replacing the drive to see if that cures it. You can get the service manual from Lenovo at

If this doesn't fix it, the hard drive is faulty. However, small size hard drives (10 or 20Gb) which suit these older machines are very cheap on eBay.

ibm thinkpad does not boot My IBM Thinkpad 600 (Type 2645-310) stops and hang during bootup. What happens is: 1. LED test, then green Power on and orange battery/charging 3. RAM OK (Responds when I take out /put in different amount of RAM and displays correctly. I have 128 + 32 removable, + 32 internal not possible to take out) 2. I can hear fan, CD drive and evt diskette drive. If I use diskette drive the LED wil give 1 blink, if I use CD drive it will give 14 blink. 3. No cursor seen, but this is displayed: Upper left show the amount of RAM present: 196032 KB OK Upper right IBMs logo in blue; IBM Lower left shows "ThinkPad(R)" in large letters and red dot over "i". 4. Then a "rrrrrr" sound from the loudspeakers after a while, this is in fact 28 clicks shortly after each other. Then nothing more happens. Diskette and CD drive is OK (But can not be used because bootup is never finished). I hear CD speed up and then down again but nothing more happens. No effect in booting with bootable diskette or CD, "Live Linux" CD or else. Backup battery OK (3V) and if I take it out I will be asked for correct date and time when Power on. I can then use keyboard or TrackPoint to set date and time, and after that hangup at the usual point. Starting without battery, HDD, CD drive and removable memory sticks makes no difference in symptoms. Pressing and holding F1 before and during poweron and startup (in order to enter BIOS and selftest) has no effect. I could not find help on IBMs home page, but maybe I did not look at the right place. Is somebody able to help me?
