Can't Reformat Kingston DataTraveler 2.0 USB memory stick

I have a Kingston USB DataTraveler memory stick with 8 GB capacity. I was using nUbuntu Linux which is a Live CD and selected an option called "Install to USB" so that I can boot the Linux OS from my USB stick. I did that but halfway through I pulled the USB stick out. Now when I look at it through Windows XP, the name has changed from "Kingston DataTraveler" to "Live". Windows allows me to format it to eith FAT or Fat32, but in the capacity box, it only allows me to format it to 806 MB, rather than the full 7.5 GB/8 GB.

The 806 MB is, I assume, the size allocated by the Linux distro for the bootable Linux OS.I can't no longer format it to the original size. What do I do?

    Hi,

    Thanks for the info.

I solved it with the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool. Quick and simple without any command line needed :-)

Use any linux bootable distro, like puppy (100 MB ) Slax ( 200 MB) or ubuntu to make a live boot, or use any pc which has linux installed can format your USB to its full capacity.

It probably has two partitions on it now, the 800MB and then the rest.

Use a bootable distro like those above, open a terminal and run: fdisk -l to see which disk is your USB drive, say /dev/sde

then run sudo fdisk /dev/sde
Press d
tell it partition 2
Press d again
it should delete partition 1
Press n
Tell it that you want a primary partition
Accept the defaults for the rest of the questions
Press t to change the partition type
Type c (Fat 32, LBA)
Press w (write the partition)

Then you'll need to format the drive with:
mkfs.vfat /dev/sde1

That should do it.

I made partition in my Kingston 4 GB USB and one of the partition is not opening. I want to delete partitions to get my 4 GB capacity back.

Probably best to copy all files off and reformat it.
It would have made more sense to use folders and not partitions.
You may not be able delete the partition if you cant open it.
Does it show up in disk manager?

My 2 GB Kingston memory card is locked. how to open it?

You'll need to reformat the card in order to reset the flash memory.

This is fairly simple to do. Simply insert the card into your card slot and go into My Computer (or just Computer in your start menu, if you're using Windows Vista or 7).

Next, right click on the icon that represents your card (this will be easily recognizable by looking at the capacity of the drive, it should be around 1.6-1.8 GB) and select "Format...". Format your drive using the recommended settings (usually FAT32, Quick Format) and you should be able to access it.
