Hi its such a long story as to why i did this to the hard drive but the basics are that i forgot admin/bios/config password so cant log on to lptop so i attched it to my pc via an adater and tried to format it, it was almost at the end when a screen pops up saying could not format drive. I have windows xp and yes i have reinstallation disks :-)

  • pinkkelly979 Apr 21, 2009

xp disk will not start on its own due to boot order and i cant change the boot order because i cant remember the password hence removing the hard drive and doing it via my pc.

The problem with installing the OS with the laptop HDD in the other PC is that the installation will find the hardware in that PC and not the laptop. Chances are that Windows would not run when the drive is returned to the laptop. So we need to look at other options.

Do you have, or could you borrow(beg), a floppy drive for the laptop? If not, do you know if USB devices are above the HDD in the boot order?

If you can come up with a FDD and a Windows boot disk, you can try to boot the PC with the flopyy and choose the 'Start with CD-ROM support' option. Once it boots, insert the XP installation CD. If it doesn't autorun, you will need to find the setup.exe on the CD and run it manually.

Let me know what you are able to come up with and I'll try to get you to the next step.

Oh but I do love a nice challenge, er make that opportunity! Let's take this a step at a time and see how far we get. Put the HDD back into the laptop. Put the XP installation CD into the CD drive and the start the computer. Watch for the screen to say "Press any key to boot from CD . . ." or something like that. Press a key. Setup will start and copy files. Eventually the actual setup portion will begin. You will see a menu of installation choices. Choose to install XP. The next screen will also be a menu. One of the choices is to repair the current installation by pressing 'r'. Press 'r' and then follow the prompts. XP will be re-installed back to the service pack level of the CD, but all of the applications that were installed will still be installed. The computer will restart when the installation has completed. The Windows passwords will all be blank. IT will be like starting a new PC. This will NOT effect a BIOS password, but for now that should be all right.

Get that far and then let me know how you are doing. If there are errors, let me know what they are as accurately as possible.

Good luck, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Why did you need to put the drive into your PC? Do you have the XP installation CD? Do you have a CD-ROM drive for the Latitude?

Let me know and I'll try to help you.

The drive itself may have died. But, try this... with it installed on your pc, right click on my computer, then left click on manage.

When the computer management screen appears, highlight drive management on the left side of the window. Your drives will now show up on the right. Delete the partition and recreate it (by right clicking on the drive) and then try to do another format.

Hope this helps

I cant format my laptop . when i run xp cd after

Sorry, it sounds like your hard drive failed. It is either that, or your XP install CD has an error. If it is the hard drive, it is easy to replace. Take it to your local PC techie and he/she will put a new hard drive in for a lot less than a new PC. Check out eBay as the cheapest place to buy a replacement hard drive; there are two types of hard drives for laptops - SATA and IDE. Got to buy the "right" one.

I have a Toshiba A45-S121 laptop. I upgraded my hard drive from a 40GB hard drive to a 320GB Western Digital. Loaded Windows XP and formated drive in FPTS format. The computer rebooted to the hard drive...

Best possible solution put back your 40GB and try to get an external casing for your 320GB to see if it works. And try windows on NTFS instead of FPTS, so reformat your 320GB and install the Windows XP again.
I hope this solution is helpful.

HP Compaq 7300. Tried to load Windows XP but before installation cannot see HDD, yet in BIOS one can do HDD integrity check and akk ok. Where is the problem?

You need to format first. If install cannot see drive, drive maybe faulty, or need an F6 driver SATA.
www.custompcblog.com/.../installing-windows-xp-sata-hard-drive
Check out link above.
If you cannot, format and "See" the drive, then it is most likely faulty. To test you must get a SATA/IDE USB Dongle, they are a few dollars. Connect uo the harddrive you have taken out of the laptop, and connect up via the USB poet, on another PC. IF it installs and shows up, then the problem may lay with your laptop, however, at this point, if you want, and drive is blank or you don't want anything on the drive, use Windows, and Format the drive, NTFS, now. Then take it back to laptop and try to reinstall. IF it STILL will not "See" the drive, then the laptop is definitely faulty. if it does, continue on and install Windows. Remember to set BIOS to Boot from DVD first. and set back, at finish of install.

Hi guys..i got a problem with my laptop cq40.i cant install vista os.3 type os i had tried.but none of them can install.otherthing,is it my cq40 cant use windows xp sp3?

you may need to format your hard drive before installing any operating system on your laptop. also try removing the hard drive, use an ide/sata adapter and connect it via USB or install inside another computer.

use THAT computer to format your hard drive and install your operating system initially and then remove it and place it back in the laptop to finish the process.

No system found ...and tells check cable

Can you enter the CMOS and veryfy that is boothing from the hard disk? you have to remove any cd, dvd, usb drive too. Enter the BIOS/CMOS by pressing F2 xor DEL when booting. Look for BOOT sequence, and set the hard disk as firt boot device. If after that doesnt boot, reinstall OS and if after that doesnt boot, you need a new HD.

Error message NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

You need to either reinstall windows, or take the hard drive out, hook it up as a spare drive to a working computer and copy NTDLR to the root of the laptop hard drive. It would be much easier to reinstall windows. You can always use the recovery portion of Windows, but if I were you I would just do a format and reinstall. NTDLR is just a startup file for Windows XP, that does not mean your hard drive is gone or anything. Please don't forget to rate!..Thanks

You don't need to change or buy another hard drive, unless you want to install a larger size hard drive.
Boot up with the Windows CD and reinstall Windows.

Computer wont load past the windows logo

Instead of doing a system repair, wipe the hard drive, reformat (NTFS), and reload the operating system. Then you will need to go to Dell's support site and download the drivers. You already know that you can't do installs from safe mode, only under normal operation, so, if the reload doesn't take, let me know the details as to why or what it's doing and I'll see if I can narrow the problem for you.
