Question about Invacare Pronto M51 Power Wheelchair

3 Answers

Clicking I tried to take the Pronto m51 over a step that was too high. I held the joystick forward to try to go over the step, but couldn;t get over it. I heard a scraping noise thay I thought was the bottom of the chair trying to go over the step. We were able to get it over the step by lifting it, but now it makes a loud clicking noise when I touch the joystick. It's coming from the base of the chair. It happens when I move the joystick or if I tap it. The chair is still working.

Could I have damaged something when I held the joystick forward and was stuck on the step? I'm not sure of the model but it is about 3 years old.

  • jmholzwart Apr 20, 2009

Can I disassemble the base myself?

Thanks for your help. I'll call for service.

Hi jmholzwart,

It seems that there has been a damage to few of the cables. There are always few unshielded cables in most of the motorized Invacare wheelchairs.

The only fix is to disamble the machine and then you need to fix the cables. This problem occurs when you use joystick or if you tap it. Because all the movement of the wheelchair is maintained by a set of cables.Any damage to that would cause a loud noise and later on you might face an issue with the movement of the chair ( if the cables are seriously damaged ).

I hope the above solution would be able to assist you in fixing the problem.

Thanks for using Fixya.

    Hi Jmholzwart,

Though i love people who love to fix the problem yourself. However, in this case i would not recommend. While trying to fix that, even if there is more damage to the cables, it might make your wheelchair unusable.

I would advise you to look for local tech to fix the fault for you.

I hope you do agree to spend 50 bucks rather than trying to fix yourself and in the end losing more than 100 bucks,

    Thanks for using Fixya.

Powerchairs have electric brakes on the motor drives that automatically engage and disengage when the joystick is activated, or released. A solenoid "clicks-in" releasing the brake, then clicks back to lock the brake. This clicking should have been noticeable before you tried the bump, and it is normal. If it is clicking while the chair is in motion, this is a whole different animal. It could be caused by damage to the gear assembly, or to the electric motor, or to the coupler which connects the two. In this case, you should refer it to a qualified technicial for repair.

Usually, scraping the motor/gear assembly won't cause damage, unless you whack it real hard cracking the gear casing, the frame holding the assembly onto the chair, or bending an axle or wheel.

Hi

There are a few problems faced with the model of your chair. Please find the resolutions for the most common ones at:

http://www.usatechguide.org/itemreview.php?itemid=668

It shouldn't be making the noise unless you have the QLogic Controller that can make beeps when you move to a fuction.

Thanks

No not necessarily there has to be some parts broken. Sometimes due to vibration such noise does happen.

Please try some different places to work with the chair.

How do I adjust the seat height on a Pronto M51 with SPJ+ Joystick

The seat height can be adjusted by removing the seat and raising up the 4 seat pillars on the bottom frame. With the pivot seat model you can raise the center post seat pillar.

My pronto m51 sure step service light is flashing seven time and it will only turn to the right

sarah check the joystick cable try unplugging it from the rear of the joystick and plugging it back in then unplug it at the back of the chair and plug it back then turn the chair on to see if you are still getting 7 flashes. If you are then you have one of 2 problems the joystick cable somehow is bad or the joystick itself has got a problem try the cables first to see if it fixes the problem If Medicare paid for the chair then they will pay for most of the repair Contact Roadrunner Mobility @ 1-800-467-2668 Hope this helps you

Invacare pronto m51 moving very slow. moves free and easy when in neutral

Check that the speed control on your joystick is set to high. If it is then you probably have a battery problem. Even with all the lights lit on the joystick you can have one battery of the two on the chair that is not charging fully. This will cause the M51 to creep and not work correctly

My hand control is locked how do I unlock it

Hi. The answer depends on what brand of controller you have, Dynamic or VSI.
Try this.
Push on button to turn on machine.
Push the joystick to full forward until it beeps.
Pull joystick to full reverse until it beeps.
Release the joystick. There will be a long beep.
It should now be unlocked.
Hope this helps. Neil.

Control box on pronto m51 wheelchair don;t work

When you say "control box" I assume that you mean the joystick. If there is no power to the joystick be sure that the batteries are fully charged and be sure that they do not need to be replaced, also be sure that the cables were not put on wrong. If all that checks out then be sure that all the cables are tight.

If all these do not solve the problem then you need to have the joystick tested.
