Question about Standard (CRT) Televisions
I have a 31" JVC TV that the screen jumps / flickers vertically. This happens quite a bit when it is cold / first turned on. As it warms up the problem goes away. The other day I turned it on and it started jumping, I smacked the left side of the TV and it stopped. Then each time I smacked it I could make the problem re-appear. I've heard this is could be a cold solder joint and am looking for advice on which IC to re-solder. Any help would be extremely appreciated. Thanks, Neal
The solder joints on the vertical output IC have cracked and need to be resoldered. The vertical output IC is mounted on a heat sink and has 13 pins all in one row. It is most likely labeled LA7838. Carefully resolder that IC and your set will play fine.

I've heard this is could be a cold solder joint and am looking for advice on which IC to re-solder. 1 whatever you have heard is correct as whenever you smacked the lelt side it works fine. 2 you will have to check loose contact in vertical section. your vertical ic might be located at the left side of the tv. 3 check any connector is loose near vertival section. 4 any preset is loose in vertical section. it is a simple problem if you are not technical person please get it done by tech person. as your tv is old & if it is done by tech person tell him to replace all elrctrolytic capacitors in vertical section. good luck.
