Question about Yamaha 12V Air Pump

1 Answer

2001 Yamaha 1200 XLT seems to have engine locked up

The engine seems to be lockup and not sure if engine or pump is the problem. Engine had teaspoon of oil in each cylinder when it was stored. Had all the spark plugs out and sill can not turn engine over. Tryed to turn the output shaft with no avail. Battery is good and starter seems to strike the fllywheel hard. Not sure how to sperate the engine form the pump to see which is the problem. Can not understand why the engine ran fine when put away and now it will not turn over.

You can take the whole pump *** out from the back of the ski you will see the main bolts at 2,5,8 and 11 oclock there are two sets of them one on the nozzle and a set on the pump take all of the steering cable bolts out first and the reverse cable as well once you get the nozzle off the pump assembly will come out complete that way u can find out if it is a impellar bearing seized that will lock your whole motor if you need a break down go to riva yamaha and go to origanal parts finde4r and pick your ski it will help

2002 Xlt 800 runs great on the lift, then bogs and dies under throttle in water

it is possible that it is a carby problem or pump diaphragm
the problem indicates insufficient fuel when under load from the pump ( not under load when out of the water)

My car vw caddy overheated due to water pump not working properly and the engine is not starting anymore what should Ido

Pressure test the radiator to test for water leaks, remove the spark plugs and do a dry compression test and record readings, Then do a wet test by adding a teaspoon of engine oil to each cylinder in turn and record readings, all cylinders in dry and wet tests should be within 25 psi of each other, any low cylinder that does nor increase with the wet test could have a ring or valve fault, if it does not pass this test it needs a engine rebuild. if ok check for fuel and ignition faults.

Rad hose blew gauge went to red pulled over spuddered then stalled tried to start cranks kinda slow

Engine may be tight because oil has fried and deposits are on cylinder walls. Might have even broken some rings, but try changing oil, pull all plugs and add 1 teaspoon new oil to each cylinder. Crank with plugs still out for a few seconds, reinstall plugs and try to start. Good luck.

Timing correct firing off

what engine Shawn. ? how can we guess that?
besides following the FSM steps, we could:
ive rebuilt many engines (done many from scratch) +machine work.

1: I check compression 1st. on all cylinders. (i put oil in the cyl, 1 teaspoon) (some pros run oil gallery primers pumps first in pro rebuild shops) i just crank the zero fuel engine until i see max oil pressure.)

oops. ? no oil pressure, oops, compression bad. on 1 jug.
(all that good, so)
2: i then crank it over , with no spark or fuel and check for top end oiling. Valve covers off. (so those V.C go on last)
ive watched many an noob burn up a new engine, not doing the steps in the rebuilders books. it only takes me 30min. to do this. why skip it.?

3: ok , I got top end oil, got 150psi on all jugs. (hard work pay back)

4: i check for spark all cyl. it's strong, & out comes the timing light.
oops, timing is off, or spark wires routed wrong, (dizzy engines)
i check all cylinders for hot spark and #1 timed right. and routed right.
the strobe light never ever lies to me....

MILESTONE 1: TEST FUEL moments.
5: wow ,car runs on test fuel (spray can, CRC engine start with top end lube feature) (fuel pump is shut off on purpose , in all steps to here)
i repeat this say 3 times, listening carefully for noises, that are not good. (why start the engine and watch it blow up. )
It is so good, to hear it run for 3 seconds,, wow.
im 100% sure you can get here..... if you do the steps.
Now comes, light the fires and kick the tires. not FIRST.

6: now comes fuel
how to get fueling to work.
that takes understanding the ASD and how to use a $1 NOID lamp.

I check injectors then add fuel pressure.
are the injectors firing?
injectors ,click cranking ?(stethoscope tool $5)
if not, use the NOID, is the PCM firing the NOID? y/n?

why do this , with pump dead.
Answer to not wreck your new rings, all washed free of all oil buy
injected, unburned raw fuel .. that is why.
i get all my injectors firing then , turn the fuel pump on.
its your hard labor, 50 hours? to build and engine?
wana waste all that? nah.
I last , plug my fuel pump back in,
does the PCM start enging for 2 seconds, and then cuts fuel?
BAM ASD.

ive never burned up a new engine, yet,
im not lucky, or smart, just had good teachers.

jeep ways!
I kill my pump by pulling the pump feed wire.
i do that because some newer jeeps , kill everything (ASD) including spark,
if you pull the fuel pump relay. (jeeps with new pump monitor features)
so i cut the feed AFT of the relay, on all cars. (conn. pulled)
the FSM shows this spot.

hope that helps.

Cylinder compression

Pour in a teaspoon or 2 of heavy engine oil through the spark plug hole of that cylinder, and remeasure compression. If it improves, you probably have a broken piston ring. If not there is likely a burned valve seat or a leaky head gasket by that cylinder. Further diagnosis will lead to removal of the head.

How old is the mower? Is it OHV or flathead? Does it burn oil? Low compression in these small engines is usually caused by bad rings. Try putting one-half teaspoon of motor oil in the cylinder, crank the engine without the spark plug in, replace the spark plug and try to start the engine. If it starts and runs, then the rings need to be replaced. By putting oil in the cylinder, you re-seal the rings to the cylinder wall, this is only temporary. Deglaze the cylinder wall and replace the rings and you should be good to go.
