Dvd cr rom not readable and not working

There are 2 assemblies inside it.
One works to read/write CD media.
One works to read/write DVD media.
So, your device is "half-broken".
Replace it.

There are things we need to isolate.

Try first to test the DVD ROM using a Drivers Utility CD came with your computer.

Try booting to this CD to check if the DVD ROM still works.

Try to run but not install the OSCD to a different computer, just to check if the OSCD is readable.

If your DVDROM reads media try again the installation of OS booting to DVD ROM thru F12.
But before that I would like to know if your laptop has more than 1GB RAM? If yes try installing OS again with 1GB RAM installed. You need to remove the other RAM.

There's a big possibility that your DVD drive requires replacement. You can try the resolution below if it didn't work you probably need to replace your DVD drive.

You have to check your CD/DVD Rom to make sure the device is not faulty.

Open your Windows Explorer, insert any CD/DVD to see whether your CD/DVD is able to read the the disk.

If it cannot read the disk, most probably the CD/DVD rom is faulty and you have to replace it.

CD games from consoles, are not readable on a regular computer CD/ DVD roms.

Have you tried cleaning the laser assembly? If your OS still sees the drive then it may just be having trouble reading.
Try this

First try to boot from your xp cd. If it fails to boot from the cd then your drive is screwed. If it does boot from the XP cd then ONLY try the following


Click Start.
Click Run.
The Run dialogue box appears.
Type devmgmt.msc in the run dialogue box and click OK.
Click on the plus sign next to DVD/CD ROM Drives.
Locate your DVD/CD ROM drive in the list of devices.
Verify the type of drive in your computer and that the type of media you are using is supported by the drive. Use the table below to determine the supported media types.
DVD+/-RW Read CD or DVD media, write DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD-R, CD-R, CD-RW media.
CD-RW/DVD Combination Drive To read CD or DVD media, and write CD media.
DVD-ROM Drive To read CD or DVD media.
CD-RW Drive To read and write CD media.
CD-ROM DRIVE To read CD media.

Try cd drive now before trying the next step


Click the Start button, right-click My Computer, and click Manage.
The Computer Management window appears.
Click Device Manager.
Click the (+) plus IDE controllers section.
Double-click the appropriate IDE channel.
The IDE Channel Properties window appears.
Under the Advanced Settings tab, verify that the transfer mode is set to DMA if available.
Click the OK button to save the change. At this point, you may need to restart for the change to become active.

Check to see if the drive will work in safe mode. I it still does not work Update the firmware for the optical drive.
Try cd drive now before trying the next step

Click the plus sign (+) next to CurrentControlSet.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Control.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Class.
Click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
On the right side of the window, click UpperFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
On the right side of the window, click LowerFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
Click File, and then click Exit.
Restart the computer normally.

If all these steps fail then you will need to replace your drive.

try to clean the lens with lens cleaner..if not worked..thenn change the lens of CD rom...

try with a new cd rom

Have you tried lowering the burn/erase speed? To begin, simply do what you need to do on the lowest speed, and then keep increasing until it gives the error again. This will most likely work. I had this problem and I burn now CDs at 16x.

It's possible that the drive has died. CD and DVD drives are notorious for short lives but then I've seen some last 5 years. The lens could be dirty, just a small piece of lint is enough to cause hassles. Try using a Lens cleaner, available from all good audio shops. Some machines don't like +R disks and a firmware upgrade is needed. I've done many Liteon Drives with terrific results but if the manufacturer hasn't put one out then you're lost. It's possible you've used the wrong upgrade to fix your problem. With the prices of drives today it's sometimes cheaper to replace it.
