While you have that battery out make sure that the metal bar that covers the memory chips and "HOLDS THE HD INPLACE" is still there. I've often found that people like to leave these out after replacing memory or upgrading hard drives. Without it the hard drive can and will eventually work loose enough to cause this problem.. Sometimes manifesting as an intermittent problem at first.

This means that operating system is corrupted, missing or faulty hard drive.
Boot from MacOSX install cd and check disk with disk utility or try reinstall macosx.
If that not gonna help then youll need to buy new hard drive and replace it.
To access hard drive you need to remove just 3 screws under battery.

Flashing question mark

Sounds like your computer needs to be looked at by a tech. Usually the flashing question mark means it doesn't recognize the hard drive or is unable to locate an operating system.

G4 powerbook wont start it shows folder with flashing question mark then apple symbol

Try taking out the RAM chips and re-inserting firmly. Nothing? Try re-installing the operating system. Nothing? Try replacing the hard drive and then re-installing the operating system. Nothing? Try replacing the RAM with new higher memory RAM. Nothing? Your fu.kd and need to take the thing in for more thorough inspection by the Apple dorks.

Screen goes white, flashing a folder with a question mark

The flashing folder means that the computer can't find the boot system on the hard drive. If your girlfriend's step-dad has removed some parts of the OS, then the system will not start giving the 'flashing folder' result. You will need to re-install the OS from the system disk.
Insert the disk into the computer and it will boot from that and take you through the install procedure.

The computer can't find an operating system. Start up from the OSX disc and check the drive with 'Disk Utility'. The system may have got damaged, or the drive may need to be repaired. Run 'First Aid'.

The hard drive is probably on it's way out. You can get and run Disk Warrior and you could repair permissions and such but the hard drive is probably on it's way to the grave.

A couple things though. It isn't enough to just put the disk in, you need to hold down "c" while the computer starts for it to try to run off your disk. You can then try to repair permissions and fix the disk from the installation program that starts. When the Install OS X screen comes up (looks like a desktop but with the big dialog box in the middle) click on Utilities at the top and then on Disk Utility. HERE IS APPLE'S SITE for you to read about how to try to repair your disk. I've found that this sometimes works and may help it work enough for you to get your files off, but may not.

Another method would be to get another Mac, and hook the two together with a firewire to transfer your files, then reinstall OS X in your ailing computer. Go HERE to read about this technique.

Flashing question mark at start up

The bootup permissions file has become corrupted in your system folder. Booting up and running an"archive and install" from the installation cd, or better, from an external hardrive, should solve the problem.
