The bird is just the startup menu, the lens is out, cause the camera is "on" - read your instruction manual

Trunkon 1960 t-bird will not open

By key or push button? If by push button you have a wiring problem. If by key probably lack of lubrication on mechanism. I'd try WD-40 before doing anything drastic. This may also apply to push button if the mechanism is not lubricated. If there is a click when the push button is pressed the wiring is probably ok.

So, on a table it would work if you pushed the button. Hang it on the wall it wont. Are you covering a sensor? Maybe try putting it on the table and placing an object like a book behind it to simulate a wall. See if it still works when you push the button. If it doesn't work with this test you may be covering a sensor. If you have to re-route a light sensor it may be a weekend project.

When it comes to bird cages, why is size so important?

Cage size is a very crucial element in regards to proper bird care. The tail of your bird should never touch the back or bottom of the cage when sitting on their perch. A very general rule to follow is that the width of the cage should be at least 1-1/2 times as wide as your bird's wingspan. Keep in mind that it is not just your bird(s) inhabiting the cage but you will need a perch and most likely some toys. My personal recommendation is to buy the largest cage you can afford.

What's a single bird cage?

The single bird cage comes in a variety of sizes and is suitable for only one bird. Check bar spacing and the width of your bird's wing span to determine the best bird cage fit. Elevate this bird cage to sit at a human's chest level.

What's a playtop birdcage?

The playtop bird cage provides a space for your bird to exercise and explore its freedom outside of the bird cage, and usually includes bird cage feeders as well. A solid top on the playtop bird cage is excellent for collecting food and other bird messes while the bird is on top of the bird cage.

I own a Canon 100 - 400 mm IS and mostlyl use it for bird photography. My problem is that the focusing of the lens is not very consistent. For example, when I was shooting a great egret somewhere between...

Which camera body do you own? It is the camera that determines where to focus and when you are in focus or not. I have 3 Canon film bodies and two digital. On all, the camera can be set to detect focus using all or a specific focus point visible in your viewfinder. Check how you have the camera set and choose ONE focus point. place this focus point on your most critical item in the image, in the case of your birds, the HEAD of the bird, press your shutter button half way to lock exposure and focus, then shift the aim to compose your image before pressing the rest of the way to make the exposure.

For birds, on my digital cameras, I choose to go into live preview mode, zoom in to 10x magnification and manually focus. This eliminates the camera not knowing what I want in focus.

try using a tripod to steady the shot, and do not forget that Canon states you should turn off the IS when the lens is used in conjunction with a tripod. From firsthand experience, I agree with this instruction, often when stable on a tripod, the IS can actually be trying to correct for its own movement and cause a degradation in image focus.

Good luck
