Question about Brother HL-2070N Laser Printer

Poor quality print

When I print there appears to be smears of dust or dirt on the left and right side of the paper. I don't know if this means that the toner is running out or not. I purchased it in November of 2006 and the cartridge was replaced in February of 2007. I think I have runned 5000 pages on it. Do you have any clues as to why the quality of my print job is awful? Thank you, Dan

Re: Poor quality print

Refer to the manual chapter on cleaning. It explains how the clean the laser scanner assembly and the corona wire. These are the most frequent causes of poor print quality, given you have a good toner cartridge and drum.

Whats the question?? if poor quality printing, it could be dirty ink cartridges, dirt on the print head, poor quality paper ??? try looking at the printer settings, sometimes they may be set to economy rather than top quality printing.

Getting Full Yield in Brother Printers - Preventing Early Supply Failures

Brother laser printers, fax machines and multifunctions all use a toner reclaim system. That means the used or left over toner (along with paper dust and debri) is recycled into the new toner cartridge supply. There is no waste section for the leftover toner and debri. This design is efficient however their are some short falls that you need to address. The toner cartridge supply is slowly contaminated with debri and dust that will send the cartridge down prematurely if your not using a good quality paper.

In addition, Brother Drum Units (ie DR-400, DR-500, DR-510, etc...) are expensive and suffer from the same premature failure problems. There is a charging brush and transfer roller inside the front top inside of the drum that drags on the drum surface to charge and discharge it properly for toner transfer. If you use poor quality the built up paper dust and debri interferes with this system and ultimately prevents it from working prperly. Here's a photo of a newer drum that failed due to the use of poor paper. Note the paper dust embedded in the transfer roller (top), caught up in the charge brush (center) and actually laying on the drum (bottom).

Here's a closeup of the charge brush so you can see the problem better below.

Below is the damage that bad paper caused. This DR-520 drum pictured is rated for 25,000 pages but due to low quality paper lasted just over 7,000. This was caused by a "Store Brand" paper.

Here below is a photo of the inside of a brother toner cartridge contaminated with paper dust and debri due to la ow quality super store brand paper. Note all the white paper dust in the toner.
To get the full yield from your Brother supplies, simply use GOOD QUALITY PAPER. STAY AWAY FROM STORE BRAND PAPERS as they go out on low price bid rather than to meet a tight quality standard. I would recommend a HP Brand paper as it's an "ALWAYS KNOWN GOOD" paper. The cheapest on the HP branded papers is HP Office and it works well.

Hope this has helped you understand the importance of using good quality paper in your brother machines. If you found this helpful, please rate it with a FIXYA as significant time and effort was used to help you.

Thanks and Happy Printing

R u using original toner? if no, replace ori. if yes, r the hot roller in the fuser hot enough? is there any gap between hot roller and pressure roller? toner smear can only be caused by non ori toner or faulty fuser unit. Faulty developer can cause sandy print out

Hello: I have a Brother MFC 8840-D laser printer. It has excellent print quality, but if the paper is folded in an envelope, by the time that the recipient opens it, the toner has smeared! I(t appears...

I assume that it smears on all the pages that you print....
The temperature of the Fuser is not reaching the correct operating temp. That means that the fuser needs to be replaced.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response. Happy Holidays!
Thanks, Joe

Printing quality poor even after changing cartridges. Isthere a traying that stores dirt etc that needs cleaning?

is the toner smearing? it could be that you have a piece of paper caught in the fuser wrapped around the pressure roller that just needs to be removed or it could also be the imaging belt has gone bad...hope this helps and if so please mark fixya...

Poor prints and paper jams

Sounds like you probably need a new fuser. Smearing is a good indicator of the fuser not getting the toner to fuse to the paper, also, if it is jamming a lot near where the paper enters the fuser, there is a good chance there is some damage on the fuser unit itself.

No longer printes perfectly horizontal on forms, now left side ok and right side drops down a little

Sounds like toner smear. The causes can be:

1. The weight of your paper exceeds the recommended paper weight for your printer.
2. The inside of your printer needs to be cleaned.
3. The toner cartridge is empty and needs to be replaced.

To correct this problem, try the following steps in order. Between each step, close the printer or make sure it's closed, turn it on, and then print a test page to see if the problem has been corrected.

1. Use only the recommended weight paper for your printer. Samsung recommends the following paper weights: 16 to 24 lb. (60 to 90 g/m2) for the main paper tray with multi-page feeding and 16 to 43 lb. (60 to 163 g/m2) for the manual tray and for the tray with single page feeding.
2. Clean the inside of your machine with a moist cloth to remove any dust or dirt inside. Note: DO NOT spray water directly into the printer. Spray the water on a cloth, and then use the cloth to clean the inside of the printer.
3. Replace the toner cartridge.

Poor, faded print quality on left and right sides of paper

Have you check the teflon at the heater? have you clean the reflector of laser? Try that.

Photo printing

If the printed output smears with a light touch, you may be printing on the wrong side of the paper. There is some photo quality paper that can be printed on both sides (it will say on the box if so), but most photo paper can only be printed on one side. Check the directions that came with the paper.
