Sometimes a partially corrupted media file will crash the media player.  Try a different media player like the free VLC:
www.videolan.org/vlc/

Also might want to check that your video driver is up to date,  as that can be another source of similar problems.

Try updating window media player to the latest version.

Power up, hold the middle touch button. Select rebuild the database.

i did a full system format - not the quick one, after i did that i was able to access the ipod in itunes to "restore" the ipod which fixed my problem - now i just have to re load everything onto it - and remember how to convert movies again........;)

sounds like the hard drive took a dump you may need to reformat totally and redo the firmware as if you dont have the ability to do this send back to the manufact and they do this stu ff all the time.
