Question about Black & Decker String Trimmer Cordless 12" 18V

Open Question

Replace Battery I am trying to replace the battery in a grass hog B&D trimmer. I have tried to remove the screws with a phillips head screw driver, but none of mine fit. Does this require a special tool to open the electric hub and replace the battery?

You've got to be kidding. My battery is useless after only about 5 years. I've already purchased the new battery for $35. Does anybody know how to replace it?

SOURCE: Grasshog trimmer line wont stop coming out and it won't break off

Rewind your string in the opposite direction than it is wound now.
If it is wound in the wrong direction it will cause the line to continue to feed out.
Good Luck, I hope this helped

I need a new spring to replace the lost one that makes the spool advance. Its a Grass hog that is a few years old. Not battery powdered, but electric. Can yoy tell me where to buy one or what size...

They have upgraded the old string heads (type 1) to a new string head (type 2). They say type 1 is no longer available. Please see part numbers 20 & 21 in this 14" Grass Hog parts breakdown diagram. The new string head is relatively inexpensive. If you don't want to get one, could I suggest you take the old spring (if you have it) and match it up with possibly a new spring at the hardware store. Sometimes you get lucky! Here is the parts diagram for it. Hope this helps!

How do you take apart the B&D H1000 Grass Hog XP to get to the inside to replace the shaft? I thought I had removed all the screws but it still won't come apart. What am I missing? Jim

Jim-

From other google searching i found this:

"Charles, there's an additional screw under the label that instructs how to turn or extend the shaft. A white line separates the 2 instructions. The screw is directly above this line. Just punch through the label and you'll find it"

Apparently once you get inside (that's how i'm spending my weekend, too), it's $53 to replace the motor and gear. $69 for a brand new one...

How can I remove the old spool kit from a grasshog xp1000? I have a new one to replace it but can't get the old one off.

After removing the screw, I had a heck of a time pulling off the old spool kit. I ended up running a rope through the holes that the cap clips into, stood on the rope and pulled up on the Grass Hog. Finally I managed to pull the old kit off. I managed to put the new one one, but I'm not 100% sure whether the cross-shaped piece at the bottom of the post is perfectly lined up with the new spool head. I was able to replace the screw and so far it seems ok.

Head of trimmer/edger doesn't spin

i have the same problem, the plastic timing pulley on the motor assembly is probably melted, remove all the screws down the side of the housing, including the one hidden under the label, and you will find that the belt and the pulley are both chewed up.

Battery replacement for unit

The unit itself is obsolete.
However....
Open the unit up (six cross-head screws). Inside you'll find a 12V 5.0AH rechargeable battery, like the kind used in many home alarm systems.
You can get a replacement at most battery stores (they'll even pre-charge it for you). Somewhere around $20, I guess.
