I have been using my Garmin rino 130 for almost 3 years for hiking. All of the suddenly it does not power on. I have swap batteries and nothing, I use rechargable batteries and made sure they were recharge and nothing. Brought new ones recharge and nothing. Put in new regular ones and nothing. try hooking up to the PC no power to the GHarmin. Can you please help? I enjoy using the rino. I can not even do a firmware update because I have not power to the unit. The User manual has no solution.

Good suggestion, however it did not work. When taking the radio apart, there is continurity from the power switch to the power. Fuse good, great contacts. I think that the radio is completely dead. Have you ever taken a rino 130 apart? Because if so, you would know that there is one board completely attached to the back part of the radio.

There first 2 main thing to check..... the off on switch.... and the fuse.
Insie the radio there is a very small fuse.... its a surface mount component fuse... very small. That could be the problem.
Also check the contacts on the radio..... if you have a way of connecting the correct voltage directly to the radios power terminals using jumpers I would definatly do it.
Your most likly going to have to take the raio apart and and connect the battery to trace the power through it.
The small fuse will be one of the first components after the positive power input.
If this seems too much..... bring it to a radio shop... they can do all this quickly

Its just another radio to me... they are all the same... the board is most likly attached to an aluminum chassis in the radio... this chassis is used for heat dissapation.
The rf power transistors.... or rf power module will be connected to something for heat dissapation. This is most likly whats attached to the raio chassis. The has to be a way to get it off.... but it might not be worth it since its all surface mount parts and it would be hard to trace the problem if your not used to it.
Well... you traced the problem pretty good so far.
That radio basically is 2 separate pieces of electronics put together... you have a GPS unit.... and a UHF radio. If you wanted to trace the power further you could make sure that both sections of the radio ( gps and radio ) are getting power.
The fact that it is getting power through the fuse and switch and not powering up makes me believe that power is not getting to a certain section....This could be from a bad regulator ( they go all the time) Certain circuits in the radio might need a lower voltage than whats going in through the battery.... these circuits will usually use a regulator to give a steady voltage even though there may be current fluctuations. Thats what the regulator is for. That could very well be whats wrong.
At this point my best advice would be to :
1. Get a schematic for the unit.
2. If you don't feel comfortable going any further, bring it to a radio shop.
The last thing I need to know is the operating voltage of this unit. What is the voltage of the battery? And when you traced the voltage through the switch etc etc, Where there any noticable votage drops?
I can try to help you out the best I can... but if you want to go any further yourself your going to need a schematic. Just go through all the basic tests to make sure its not something simple before you really dig into it or send it to a shop.
A schematic would really help you out at this point to trace voltages.
Take care... and sorry ... its hard for me diagnose an exact problem when the radio is not in front of me.
