no luck...sata drives.....tried hooking up a usb floppy.....won't recognize it either

  • waynerinke Apr 22, 2009

I have an Optiplex 755 SFF that will not recognize both the dvd rom and the hard drive at the same time. These are both new SATA drives.. If I disconnect either, the other will be recognized.

I have also bought a new USB floppy. It does not recognize either..

I think it may be a bios problem but can’t update BIOS without some DRIVES.

It will read the dvd and start to load windows, but when it is time to load to hard drive, it shows as drive not present..I am really stumped on this one.

I have tried everything I can think of...Any help would be really appreciated..

On the back of each device their should be a jumper on the right side next to where the ribbon cable plugs in. Remove the jumpers and replace them into the slot thats for "Cable Select" Their should be a picture on the top of the device if they aren't labeled. You can also put the jumper for 1 as "Master" and the other as "Slave"

ahh ok sata drives.. While installing windows you will need to provide the sata drivers on a floppy. you can use the internal or usb floppy drive. Go to and under support enter your service tag or model number and download the sata drivers. either unzip to the floppy drive or install the program and it will write to the floppy depending on what kind dell uses.

While installing windows watch the bottom of the screen as soon as it starts it will prompt you to hit F6 to install additional drivers.
Thats for XP, with vista it should detect them automatically.

One quick and easy solution is to replace the motherboard, if it is in fact found to be faulty.

Have you contacted DELL Support? Is it still under Warranty?

Numbers 3and 4 are lit on front of dell 755 nothing else comes on but fan

I was going to suggest that you have bad sectors on your hard drive that prevent you from booting, but since it won't boot from a CD either it sounds like you have a problem with your BIOS and possibly bad sectors on the HD as well. There's no simple way to fix this if that's the case, so it's best to be left up to a local pc repairman in your area...sorry

I have a dell 755 that the CD drive won't play certain CD's. It is not the CD because it plays on other machines. Some CD's will play just fine. Get's the error message Unable to Access Drive D tr

it depends on the files on the cd ...they might require a certain software to be installed in order to be read..for example the player may not be able to read mp4 without a codec installed ..or vcd (video cd ) to need a dvd player installed or a player that supports video cd and dvd-es..Same way for other file types...or ...certain speeds being imposed on writing ..and your cd drive to be unable to read them on those speeds..

Boot problem with Dell Optiplex GX150

To reinstall Xp from the CD you need to press F2 and go into the BIOS then select the boot order configuration and make the CD the first boot device and the hard disk the second boot device.
After installing XP, if you wish you can go back into the BIOS and change the boot order to boot from the hard disk first.
