Will not start, has been stored for approx. 1 yr

I have a craftsman LT1000 model 917-274361 16IC OHV mower. It has been stored for a spell. It has 13 hrs. on it. I cannot get it started. It was stored with gas in it. Should I try to take things apart, or is draining the gas tank a solution?

Drain the gas out of the tank. Take carb off and clean carb. Most likely needle and seat are gummed out from gas in it.

My lt1000 turns over and while turning over backfires. does not start. Started backfiring a couple weeks ago while in operation. would backfire, engine would die, wait a few and started again. finally,...

The engine should be an OHV type. You could try adjusting the valves under the OHV cover. Kinda like the valve lash on cars. When the valves are at rest you can set each one to about .004 with a feeler guage. You can look on youtube for a video one adjusting lawnmower engine valves. Seeing it is easier to understand then reading it.

I hope that this helps you get it fixed.

most likely the blades are still in the on position, but you have a seat switch, parking brake switch, and the blade switch, also the mow in reverse key switch. if mower dies once you let out the clutch in reverse with blades on and key wrong.
