Question about TV Receivers & DVRs

Toshiba 42 " TV

Hi. While watching tv very often the screen with go black. We still have sound. Sometimes all we have to do is turn the set off and the picture comes back right away. Other times it takes hours for the set to come back on. Do you know what the problem is and if so what we should do to fix it. Is it possible that the tv can not take the constant pausing of programs. We have Bell Expressvu and use the feature often. Thanks CC

Re: Toshiba 42 " TV

This is a sign that there is a problem in your high voltage section of your TV. The anode voltage might be dropping to a lower then normal level. This would cause this problem. I would suggest that you not try to repair this yourself becausee of the dangerous voltages that are present in the high voltage section of the TV set. You may have to take this set to a qualified electronics repair shop near you. I know this is not wha you want to hear, but the voltages involved can kill.

Check that the setting on set tv up is for HDMI. It may be on TV (non cable input, aerial for instance or AV1, DVD player).

Setting up receive set top box and tv for surround sound

Plug the TV to an open channel on your receiver via this output:
*Rear, 1 x Digital audio output (coaxial) ( TOSLINK )
This will look like a single RCA output plug.
Set that input channel on your receiver to some sort of virtual surround mode because it doesn't look like your HDTV has a decoder in it (meaning it will come out stereo and the receiver will have to fake it).
Turn the volume all the way down on the TV and use the receiver to control TV volume just as you do with DVDs.

*Substitute this with the digital audio output on your set top box if you are sending video only to the TV from the set top box (component, DVI or s-video connections). So video goes to the TV, audio to the receiver.
