Burning compressor - repair or replace?

Kenmore side by side refrigerator purchased new in 2002 for approx. $900. Came home yesterday to burning smell and smoke-filled kitchen. Fire department (!) said compressor was hot and a relay was burned. Should I bother getting it repaired or just buy a new one?

Hi,

Your compressor just went bad...

Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

Relays are located on the left side of the compressor. How long ago did you smell the burning smell? Are you 100% sure the compressor is running? If it is, nothing is wrong with the relays. Although sometimes it is hard to tell if the compressor is running. By morning temps will be higher than tonight if compressor isnt running. If it isnt running, relays must be changed. I will post shortly on how to change the relays.

Describe your Kenmore 53652 / 53654 / 53659 Side by Side Refrigerator Unit is not cooling. Stopped working after power outage

Kenmore Coldspot 106.53652300
I just fixed my neighbors fridge that suffered from a power surge. She explained that she smelt a burning smell in the kitchen and the next day the fridge and freezer were not cold. Of course she did not share the burnt smell part until after I discovered the starter relay and the capacitor were burnt on the compressor. She purchased the new starter kit and capacitor from a local supply company and while installing them I discovered the compressor fan was not running which also meant the compressor was not getting any power. I removed the screws that held the control panel on the fridge side (right side) and inspected the circuit board which I discovered a burnt trace on the board for the compressor control relay. I fixed the board by soldering a piece of solid core wire across it and it works great!
Make sure you shop around for your parts. The BIG local supplier here in Tulsa wanted $65 for the starter kit and $65 for the capacitor. We shopped around and found another supplier in Tulsa that sold them for $25 each and they were FSP parts!

GE TFF22RC Side-by Side refrigerator burning smell and no cooling

Sounds like the compressor has gone out or at least the electricals on it. You can replace the relay if that is all it is but at 26 years I would seriously consider replacement. The newer units are more energy efficient and the insulation in your unit has degraded with the years.

A rubber burning smell from my refrigerator

It could be overheating of the compressor and its surrowndings but could also be from the new type of insulation that are being used nowadays.........sodeep

Refrigerator not cooling

the most likely problem will be the start relay for the compressor. the clicking noise is the compressor trying to start and then the relay cycles back off. the part number is 8201786 and can be purchased from any loal appliance parts house thru sears.com or any othe online parts source. the kit comes with good instructions so you should be able to repair yourself.
it would be a good idea to unplug the refrig until you get it repaired to prevent possible compressor damage. thanks peyton..

Kenmore coldspot 106.52234101 side by side. Freezer defrostet producing burning rubber smell. Any idea why. sam

sam_novik:

The compressor may have a short circuit. This might be the problem. The standard warranty is five years for this part. You can call Sears 1-800-4my-home, to get more info. If they come out to repair it, there might be a diagnostic fee ($70.00) and if it is the compressor, it should be fully covered.

Let me know what happens. Thank you, Binary Bob

Smell electircal burning

The Starter Relay consists of various parts depending on the make and model of your unit. Most larger Refrigerators have these 3 components: The relay itself, the Overload, and a capacitor. If you replace the Relay and if another component is bad then you would still have a problem. A service technician could test each component individually. The first move I would make is to use an Amprobe electricians meter and check the amperage that the compressor is pulling. If the compressor is VERY HOT to the touch and pulling a lot of amperage current, than you'd need to have the compressor replaced. THis is usually the case if the unit is approx 10 years give or take. This is a very expensive fix...usually around $500 or more so it's probably worth buying a new Refrigerator if that's the case.

Arking and noisey compressor startup. can smell a burning odor after restart

sounds like a bad overload relay assy for your compressor, its attached to the side of our compressor assy if that is what making the noise heres the part number 12002784. but if its burnig and arcing enought o ruin the compressor terminals you may need a new compressor, and depending on when purchased may or may not be covered. new overload relay comes with new compressor if needed
