HP Officejet J5780 All-in-One

By djprash on Sep 20, 2007

" "
I have bought the above printer a week ago. Installed it and everything works i.e fax, printer and copier however i am having problems with the scanner side of the unit. When i press the scan button on the printer itself, it comes up with an error message saying 'No Scan Options' refer to device documentation to troubleshoot.

I have done this and have been on the HP website and tried un-installing and reinstalling the software many times and following the exact steps they recommended. Nevertheless, I have failed to resolve this issue.

One interesting thing I did notice and it does mention it on the HP website that while installing the software the installation wizard should complete with a final congratulations screen with a finish button to be pressed. During my several re installations i did notice that when the percentage bar reaches to 96% it takes several minutes before it rushes quickly to 100% and the auto installation screen disappears without a congratulations screen. Now according to HP this means the software or drivers have not been installed correctly.

The second issue im facing is that when i click on the HP Solution Center icon on my desktop an error message saying NO HP DEVICES FOUND. This is strange as I can easily print from my PC.

I have also downloaded the latest software package from the HP website and tried un installing and re installing from my hard drive rather than the CD that came with it. It comes up with the same frustrating result.

Could you kindly help me to resolve this issue.

- Thanks but if you read my detailed description I have already mentioned that I did the complete un installation and re installation with rebooting many times and following the exact steps as recommended in the troubleshooting guide. Hence the reason to post here.

There is no separate scanner. Its an all-in-one printer as mentioned above.

- Guys thanks for your concerns. I was thinking it was me but seems you are in the same boat as me. HP must know about this as they reply to my emails telling me exactly the same things they told me in the first place. I gave up with HP support staff as they were going round and round the circle. I can onyl conclude that they dont have a solution for it yet. To be honest I was spending a lot of time following their instructions and not getting anywhere. Therefore I decided to spend the same amount of time getting on with my work!!

I have a small temporary solution for scanning. I have put a shortcut of 'Scanner and Cameras' from the control panel to my desktop. I use this to scan and it works. Hope this helps. If you guys come up with resolving this issue please post it here.

Many Thanks

I just had the same problem with the same HP All-in-One. No idea what caused it, but I was able to circumvent the device and scan through the Start menu. Go to the "All Programs" list, then go to "HP", then click on "HP Solution Center". This should bring up a familiar HP screen - if not, choose "Scan Document" from the list. Hope that helps - it worked for me!

With Windows Vista you need to open Windows Photo Gallery, click on file then click on import from camera or scanner (make sure your printer is turned on) a window will open showing your printer, click import, another window will open, click on scan and away you go...

Set this options un der Control panel Scanner and camera.

If fails try this,

Uninstall everything HP Installed. Unplug the scanner. Then reboot. THen install the drivers and applications. Then reboot. then insert the HP scanner into the USB.

The best way to correct these issue is if you activate the HP Digital imaging in the startup menu , using these options

click

Start/run/msconfig/startup tab/ find hpdigital imaging application/ check the box

click ok and prompt will ask for restart

do so and viola!

I had the same problem with my J5780. I assumed that I could scan by simply placing my document on the glass and pressing "scan to" or "start scan" on the unit (what was I thinking?). I, too, uninstalled, re-installed and updated the drivers, to no avail. I resolved my issue by going into control panel and using the scanner wizard.

Go here and follow these instructions. This finally worked for me.
Note: Make sure you unplug the USB from the computer when you are reinstalling the software and drivers. You will be prompted when to plug it in.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01699977&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3301296#uninstall_reinstall

You can also try this like a previous poster noted but this won't solve the problem if the scanner drivers were never loaded or the digital imaging software isn't showing up as an option which is what happened in my situation:

Start/run/msconfig/startup tab/ find hpdigital imaging application/ check the box
-click ok and prompt will ask for restart

Had an issue where trying to scan was bringing up a 'device incorrectly connected' error (whatever route I went about trying to scan).

Solved by completely uninstalling all hp software (was only the software off the CD anyway), rebooting, reinstalling all hp software but NOT plugging the device in when asked (it gives you an option to say you can't plug the device in there and then). Plugged the device in (tried to scan but got the 'no hp devices connected' error), rebooted with it connected and switched on, and voila, it's now working fine. :)

I want to try solution #12, but my installer stopped working before it installed Solution Center. I had contacted HP Tech Support, to get help with the printer (i guess theres about 20 hoops you have to jump through, before vista will let you install J5780), but when the person connected to my laptop via remote connect, it crashed Aero, and it wouldn't appear in the color and appearance window, even after he disconnected. I contacted HP Support the next day, after i have tried everything on my own, and the only thing that person could suggest was a system restore to before the person connected to my pc, which would uninstall the printer. So i did that, and Aero works again, but now the printer doesn't work right, after i installed the software again. It got stuck at 96% for over 20 minutes, so i eventually just went to task manager and shut it down, to try again, but now it just does the add a device thing. It prints fine, copies fine, and, if i go through Windows Photo Gallery, scans fine too, but when i press the scan button, it says the NO SCAN OPTIONS thing. I can't use the CD to install the software again, because the CD that came with it doesn't work with Vista (apparently). I downloaded the full software from HP, and that's what i'm working with now. *Sigh* My only suggestion would be to use Windows Photo Gallery (Solution #3).

Had a similar problem today. Installed new HP D7360 printer + software with HP Solutions Center. Solutions Center replaced the prior HP director. Printers worked fine, HP 3500c flatbed stand alone scanner worked fine via buttons on unit, but would not work thru HP Solutions Ctr. Tried HP all the way to Corporate. No help.
Because HP Solutions Ctr. provides a hub or connection function, I suspected that an internal communications error was the culprit.
Searched their site and found col10862.exe. A 1/2 mb fix for communications error problems created by multiple copies of HP Photo Imaging software. Scanner can now be accessed via HP Solutions Center.
PROBLEM SOLVED

Suspect the reason was that new printer software had an updated version of HP Imaging software. System had exixting HP imaging Software supporting two other HP printers. Also initial installation of new printer software failed twice even though iwas following their EXACT instruction set. Installation fix was BTW not plugging in the USB cable when told to. Wait until end of software install.

Feedback ???

Worked great....now it gives me the same error message today as everyone else getting....What's up with that. i just used it yesterday and it worked. I can print and fax just fine....just not scan from the button. If i go into the printer icon and click on scanners I can scan there, but I want it to work correctly! Comment by Argrajag, posted on Jun 11, 2008

More crappy software from HP, who doesn't test any of their bloated print/scan/fax apps properly. They seem to think the rest of the world should do their job for them. If I actually needed the additional software, I'd be returning this to the store.

I bought my J5780 also in Sept 2007; all worked fine for a few months then I got the same problem withn the scanner as everyone else here has; tried all the same solutions and had all the same results..can't believe how many houirs I wasted on this!!!I was pretty sure it wasn't my pc as it was a brand new HP laptop...and there is the problem...Windows Vista. Tried it on my older pc with windows xp and it scans just fine. HP says the problem is with Vista and vice versa...just wish someone would issue a patch. The only positive that came out of this was that I learned about this web site (from the Geek Squad at best buy)

Comment by BalaGroup, posted on Mar 31, 2008

I have had the same problem with J5780. In fact, I've had two units (after convincing Office Max to replace the first one). Last week I called HP AGAIN and got a tech in the Philippines. After three hours on the phone, he FINALLY confirmed that my unit (like SO many others of this model) is defective; the software and the unit. They offered to send me a rebuilt one, but I paid for a new unit and I want another NEW unit. The manager at Office Max said they should give me the option of giving me back my money. I just don't understand why they didn't have a recall on this product!

I am so disgusted with the so-called support HP has given me on this problem. My HP Officejet J5780 All-in-One does no scan without hours of contortions. My Solution Center will not enable the scan function, nor can I initiate a scan from the device keyboard as no "scanning options" have been enabled. I have spent hours installing and un-installing the setup software which takes forever and then hangs up at 96% completion because a file closing routine fails to initiate. I am using an HP laptop of very recent vintage and also have tried installing on a previous HP desktop but with the same result. HP Support will no longer return my calls or emails. Anyone have a solution? Thanx.

Comment by orrhaus, posted on Jan 06, 2008

I have same issue. Spent over an hour with HPs technical support as well as uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled 4 times (including downloading all drivers from HPs website) only to be told to contact Windows. The HP center works, but get an error message stating the scanner function is not operating properly. (Print, Fax, etc is working great). FYI...I also have an older & less expensive HP PSC 1210 with the same issues (scanner functions does not work). Had no problems until I upgraded to a new computer with Windows Vista. Scanning with Paint is not a viable option. Is this an issue with HP printers/scanners only? Help!!

Comment by Guest, posted on Jan 05, 2008

I have the same problem with my recently purchased DeskJet F2180 All-in-one printer/scanner. The scanner function does not work after installing the software on my laptop running on Vista Home premium. The installation blocks at 96%. I cannot open the HP Solution Center. Does anyone know if HP has found a solution for this? Monica

Comment by Guest, posted on Jan 03, 2008

I don't have an all in one, but just a scanner and same problem with Solution Center not finding an HP product. I can scan pictures through adobe, but not my 35 mm slides, which is why i bought the scanner. I also did the install, uninstall, website, reinstall, even updated my usb port from intel. no help. I think i'll go back to epson, slow, but it worked.

Comment by Scanless, posted on Dec 29, 2007

I just bought a HP Officejet J5780, installed the software "successfully" and printed a test page OK. However, I was expecting to see an "HP Solutions Center" icon on the desktop or on the bottom right rail of the desktop but it is not there. I can print stuff but don't know how to Scan. When I hit the Start Scan Button or the Scan To Button, the message says "No Scan Options." I have uninstalled the HP software, re-booted, re-installed the software with the same results - scanner does not work. I also contacted HP Support and they sent me a website link to download their software - but I got the same results. Can anyone help me get the scanner to work. From Scanless in Raleigh

Comment by Guest, posted on Dec 06, 2007

Ok. I have the same problem. No wonder the stupid machine was on such a great sale. I did everything everyone suggested to date. Nada, nothing, did not work. and yes I followed the proscribed order. Can't even get the solutions center to recognize their is an HP product. OK - there absolutely is a glitch and HP needs to fix. EVERYONE copy this site and send it to HP demanding a patch. It is NOT our computers, too many people are having the same problem. My computer is brand new.

Am unable to get HP Solutions Center to open. Recently installed drivers and software for HP Deskjet F2180 All-in-one . The printer work fine as printer, but am unable to scan

Comment by Guest, posted on Nov 21, 2007

I have the same problem and HP Tech support is absolutely of no value. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, rebooted, disabled, enabled and have done everything they suggested, to no avail. I am so frustrated with this piece of equipment. Apparently HP doesn't have a solution. One tech, after 2 hours of troubleshooting, as a last resort told me I had missing dll files in my operating system but he couldn't help be with it because he did not work for Microsoft. Yep, if you can't fix the problem...blame someone else. The odd thing is the darn thing prints and copies but it won't scan.

Comment by oh horses, posted on Nov 08, 2007

I have the same exact problems with my HPJ5780 all in one. I was able to use all the functions for several months. One day I tried to scan and got the error message, "no scan options". I unistalled and re-installed the progam, that didn't work so I contacted HP, none of thier solutions. I cannot use the solutions center either, I get the same message you are getting. I am using Windows vista home premium edition. I am completely frustrated... I need all the functions this printer offered.
