Hard Drive not mounting

Check the jumper on each hard-drive.

My guess is that the WD drive has the jumper in the "correct" position, for mounting inside an external case, while the other drives have their jumper set to an "incorrect" position.

Set the jumper to MA(ster), not to SL(ave), nor to C(able)S(elect).

I recently purchased an external hard drive, and how do connect it to my computer.

External Hard Drive is mostly of the USB interfacing type. If urs one is the same, then it is just as simple as plugging in a pen drive in the USB port. If it has external power supplies then u can easily figure out how to connect. There are two parts in the power supply (if external power supply cable is provided), 3-pin main power supply connector and other is the adapter which goes to the external hard drive.plug in the other end of the adapter into the hard drive (there is a hole in it). connect the main power cable to the adapter extension. now for the usb Hard Drive, connect the USB cable to the USB port of the computer. Switch on the power supply to the Hard drive and u r ready to use ur brand new External Hard Drive. If it is a Firewire interfacing one then u may need to open the CPU box, and then connect the firewire connector on to the motherboard firewire port. It is easy to identify, it is a red colored port/connector.

Installing Firewire 400 on a Western Digital 500gb external My Book Pro

Don't connect the USB and firewire at the same time, use one or the other. In general for USB, for the very first connection, it is better to have the computer fully booted, and the MyBook spun up, before connecting the USB cable. After that, you can boot the computer with or without the MyBook connected or turned on. For the firewire connection, check your manual for the correct order of connection and power on.

USB and firewire 400 are roughly comparable. USB is theoretically a little faster, but you will see little difference. There are other factors that can affect your actual performance, so your best answer is to try a test yourself. Time a copy of a very large file, and a copy of a folder with a very large number of files.

LaCie FireWire drive

I would seek out the latest drivers for the card in addition to checking to see the firewire card is properly installed. I would test the cable with another or ports. The D2 has a various array and combination of Firewire ports on each model. Also, try bringing the drive to another computer, to eliminate all other variables. Always of course, properly eject external hardrives and wait for confirmation whenever disconnecting it from the computer, and allow the drive to spin down before turning it off.

Lacie 1000gb external drive

I own a Lacie product that does the same thing. It uses firewire but it was clicking a few times and then would not display as a drive. I moved to another computer (with a different firewire card) and it worked. I decided that the firewire card was the issue at the time, but the card still read other devices like digital video camera. I know you are using the USB 2.0 cable. Can you try your drive on a different computer? That would narrow the possible solutions down.

USB Connection Problems

You say have a SanMax HD-338-CB USB/Firewire External HD with a 160MB drive. You then say sometimes I have to reboot Windows XP pro 2 or 3 time before I see the drive using a USB 2.0 connection. Fire wire is a different system with a different connector style- so it should not be in a USB port or a USB connector should not be in a Firewire device. Get you device and connections sorted The desktop display simply puts up a device it will not differentiate which USB or Firewire
