Question about Hyundai HPT-4250 Television

1 Answer

HPT-4250 My Hyundai HPT-4250 is 2 years old There was a pop and the screen went blank Everything else seems to be working ok There is a board on the right side of the TV looking from the rear with what looks like clear flat plastic connections which seem to connect to the screen, it also has a large aluminium heatsink in the middle and a lot of large capacitors and 2 fuses one of which is blown If you replace the blown fuse the replacement fuse does not blow but you loose the sound If you remove the fuse the sound comes back I assume the board is damaged and requires replacing however this is a guess and I am unsure whether this will cure the problem even if I am able to sourse a board

    Thanks for your help
    Not sure what you mean
The power supply must be ok I assume if everything else works except the picture
The blown fuse I am talking about is on the board which seem to be connected to the screen which I am assuming is the video board and not the main power supply ?

    Thanks again for your comments
However after reading your reply I had a chuckle to myself as it was way above my head
Is the board that is connected to the plasma screen with the blown fuse and the big heatsink and the bank of capacitors the IHVT power supply board or am I looking for a different board on the other side of the TV where the power cable comes in

I think what has happened is that your power supply malfunctioned and what has happened is that a capacitor has blown up. I would suggest that you do a complete search of the power supply to determine the location of the blown capacitor, I would advise getting a schematic to aid you in this. If you don't have experience in electronics I would also advise taking the set to the shop or calling a repairman to take care of this issue.

    Hello Johnayhome,

The power supply of modern TVs is derived for the old Scan Rectification power supplies which are the predecessors of today's switching power supplies. They work the same way, the low voltage power supply turns on an oscillator which excites the HV transformer (IHVT) at a higher frequency then the 60 HZ which is common in the low voltage power supply. The HV power supply running at a higher frequency becomes easier to filter once converted into DC hence lower value capacitors (1000uf vs 50,000uf) are needed. Now here is the cool part about all of this; The voltage that powers the anode of the picture tube comes from where? The IHVT. The voltage that powers the video circuitry comes from where? The IHVT via voltage regulators, The voltage that is connected to the entire TV except for the Audio stages comes from where? That's right the IHVT. The reason that the audio is spared the task of being powered by the IHVT is because the frequency of the ripple of the power supply voltage of the IHVT is 15.750KHZ which is part of the audio frequency range, but so is the 60Hz of the low voltage supply, however 60HZ is not as drastic as 15.750KHZ. 60HZ hum happens and can be filtered out and still maintain good bass response, however you start removing 15KHZ and you start stepping on your High frequency response and that affects too much. hench the audio stage can deal with 60HZ hum but not 15KHZ whine.

So what I am trying to say is that the screen voltage and the power supply are linked. Since the IHVT is common to both of them directly.

I hope that this provides some helpful information.

    Respectfully Submitted,

Check the speaker/s first. If found OK; check and replace the damaged component/s at its audio output section circuit board. If needy, replace this board as card basis. When tv turned on screen stays blank?

Several causes can be attributed to this. If the contrast and brightness have been tampered with then the display remains black.
On the other hand if the picture IC is fried then this is possible. In this case you have to refer your unit to an expert.
Hope this solution has been helpful?
