Re: ram slots

When using an even number of slots, you can set the ram in a dual-channel config. Generally, 4 slots means slots 1 and 3 are a pair and 2 and 4 are a pair. The machine will automatically look for these pairs first, and they're going to be faster. If you have 4 ram chips, it won't matter, so long as you (if you're using different ram) pair like chips together, ie, if you have 2 pc4200 and 2 pc5200, 1 and 3 should have the 5200 and 2 and 4 the 4200.

Need a manual for an HP Compaq dc5100 pc

Really? It should be in Slot 1. (DIMM 1)
A Processor reads Slot 1 first.***=HP+Compaq+dc5100+20080404081+%7C+Flickr+-+Photo+Sharing%21&sigr=16pkmjpub&sigi=16irimlt9&sigb=11q4rp0eh&fr=moz35

Scroll down to the larger photos of the motherboard.

Notice how the one Black ram memory slot is closer to the Processor?
That is Slot 1.

Keep the ram memory in the same color of ram memory slots.

IF you have the SAME ram memory modules ('Stick') in the Black slots, you will be running the ram memory in a dual channel configuration.

Same thing for the white ram memory slots.

Most generally the ram memory 'sticks' are bought from the same manufacturer, so as to guarantee they are indeed the same.

Same 'speed' (Frequency rate, actually)
Same voltage used
Same ram timings
Same chip configuration

Having the two LIKE ram memory modules installed in a dual channel configuration, allows them to team up on the task at hand.

Purported to speed up the ram memory functions greatly.
Up to 30 percent.

This has found out to be bullsticks.
The actual increase is more like 1 to 2 percent.
Nothing to write home to Mom about.

(Tom's Hardware used MANY different motherboards, ram memory, processors, and associated hardware, and tested different ram memory.
All came to the same conclusion. 1 to 2 percent increase.
Why do gamers use dual channel configuration?
1 to 2 percent increase. EVERY little bit helps)

I using a dual channel configuration for your motherboard, two LIKE ram memory modules are installed in Slots 1 and 3, (Black)

Have four LIKE ram memory modules? They go in Slots 2 and 4.

My pc will not boot up with both ram memslots filled take on ram out either one dosnt matter and it works fine put it bacvk in and locks aftwer boot or not boot at all

You need to seperate the ram sticks.Im assuming you have 4 slots.Color coded.Say 2 blue 2 white.
So 1 stick goes in white slot and the other goes in blue slot.

Or if you have 2 slots and while using both ram sticks you still can not boot up.This is beacause one of the sticks is different then the other.Read the ifno on the sticks.Something is not the same.

YES. The slots are for different kinds of memory. ONLY use the 2 new cards and insert them into the SAME colour slots. You should NOT mix memory types. Forget the old modules.

if you load bios defaults does this help . . . clean both the dims and sims and blow out the ram slots . . . what kind of ram are you using ( are they an origanal pair eg your not mixing two differant types of ram as this can cause this problem as they can run and differant speeds)
