The power light is on but it will not power up.

The power light is on but I cannot turn the computer on. It will not power up at all.

    no beeps or anything, it does not do anything at all when I try to turn it on.

Compute turns on, lights light up, and fans move, but there are no beeps or bios showing up.


Hi,

Computer turns on but no display. This issue is commonly caused by electrical static on the motherboard. Try doing a power drain.

If this computer is a laptop:
1. Turn the computer off by pressing the power button for a bout 5seconds.
2. Take the battery out of the computer.
3. Unplugged the ac adapter.
4. Press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds. (without any power source)
5. Put the battery back in and plug the ac adapter back into the computer.
6. Turn the computer back on.

If this computer is a desktop:
1. Turn the computer off by pressing the power button for a bout 5seconds.
2. Unplug the power cable from the computer.
3. Press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds. (without any power source)
4. Plug the power cable back into the computer.
5. Turn the computer back on.

Gateway mx6448 Notebook will not power on, Red LED flashes 4 times when power on button is pressed then nothing happens. It is the same with only the battery. LED will not flash if I have only the power...


There can be many things associated with no power to the computer.
  • The outlet into which the computer is plugged may be inoperative.

  • The surge protector you are using may be inoperative.

  • The power cable may be loose or damaged.

  • An internal device may be damaged.

  • The power supply may be inoperative.

Basic Troubleshooting Power to the Computer
There may not be a consistent flow of power to the computer.
  1. Verify that the outlet into which you are plugging the computer is operational.

  2. If you have the computer plugged into a surge protector, plug it directly into the outlet.

  3. Verify that the power cable is plugged securely into the back of the computer.

  4. If you have a monitor with a removable power cord, swap the power cords between the monitor and the computer.

Note: If you recently added a new hardware device prior to experiencing the no power issue, turn off the computer and remove the newly added hardware. If there is still no power, reseat all the other cards and cables in the computer to verify that all other devices are seated securely.
Resolving Power Supply Issues
  • External Device Conflicts
  • There may be an external device causing the computer not to turn on properly.

    1. Before continuing, verify your computer is turned off.

    2. After you have established that adequate electricity is going to your computer, verify that the voltage switch on the back of the power supply is set correctly. The small red switch is to be set to the 115-volt setting.

    3. Remove all external devices except the monitor and turn on the computer. If the fan on the back of the computer now spins, turn off the computer. Plug in the external devices one at a time and turn on the computer after each device is added.

    4. Note: If you removed all external components and the fan on the back of the computer does not spin, the problem is with something inside the computer.

  • Internal Device Conflicts
  • This helps determine if the issue is a damaged or badly seated component.

    1. Verify that the computer is turned off.

    2. Remove the case from the computer.

    3. Remove all the red, yellow, and black power connectors from each floppy disk drive, CD-ROM drive, and tape backup unit that is in the computer. The only devices connected to the power supply are your hard disk drive and motherboard.

    4. Turn on the computer and verify that the fan on the back of the computer spins. If it does not spin, turn off the computer.

    5. Remove the power connection from the hard disk drive and reconnect power to one floppy disk drive. Turn on the computer and verify that the fan on the back of the computer spins.

    6. Reseat the power connection from the power supply to the motherboard. Turn on the computer and verify that the fan on the back of the computer spins. If the power has been restored, turn off the computer and reconnect the power connections to the devices. Test the computer for power after reconnecting each device.

  • Power Switch
  • The power switch may not be functioning properly.

    1. You may need to open the case and readjust the power switch.

    2. Locate the control panel inside the computer and remove any screws holding it in place.

    3. Turn on the computer with the control panel removed by pressing the button on the control panel that corresponds to the power button. If the power supply fan spins and/or the computer turns on, put the control panel back in its place. Try to turn on the computer again.

  • Test Switch and Diagnostic LED
  • Note: Not all power supplies have a test switch and diagnostic LED.
    Certain power supplies have a test switch and LED to help better troubleshoot the device. The green LED is always on when the computer is powered on. If the computer is not receiving power please perform the diagnostic test below.

    1. Verify that the computer is turned off.
    2. Remove the case from the computer.
    3. Remove all of the red, yellow, and black power connectors from each floppy disk drive and ROM drive and the tape backup unit (TBU) that is in the computer. Remove all power connectors from the motherboard. The only device that needs to be connected to the power supply is the hard disk drive.
    4. Press and hold the test switch for five seconds on the power supply, and then verify that the green light on the power supply comes on.
    5. If the light comes on:
      1. The power supply is good and something that was plugged into the power supply is causing the computer to not turn on.
      2. Plug devices in one at a time, testing with the test switch between each device to determine what is causing the power issue.
      3. If all devices are plugged in and the light is working, the connections may have needed to be reseated, or it is possibly a power switch issue.
      4. Go to the power switch section of the power supply checklist for additional troubleshooting steps.

    6. If the light does not come on:
      1. Disconnect the power from the hard disk drive, and then plug in power to the CD-ROM drive and determine whether the light comes on.
      2. If it does, follow the preceding information - "If the light comes on."
      3. If the light still does not come on, contact Gateway Technical Support.

    7. Confirm that power from the power supply is connected to the motherboard. Remove all cards and cables from the motherboard, and press and hold the test switch for five seconds on the power supply and determine whether the green light-emitting diode (LED) comes on.
    8. If the LED comes on, put the devices back in one at a time, testing between each device to determine what is causing the issue.

My computer went blank when turning it on


1) Computer isn't working, due to the Processor isn't working, due to a bad Power Supply.
Weak voltage power rail.

Enough power perhaps to light LED lights, and maybe spin fans, but not enough power to turn the Processor on.

Computer Power Supply's are rated in Wattage.
Volts times Amperes = Watts.
(Average computer power supply in a fairly new computer, is rated at around 300 Watts)

A) ALL of the LED lights combined, use less than 1 Watt of power.
B) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts.
C) A typical Processor may use 51 to 125 Watts.
Depends on what Processor it is.

Power Supply with a weak voltage power rail, can have enough power to light LED lights, spin fans, but not enough to turn the Processor on.

Solution?
Test the voltages of the Power Supply,

Or, use a KNOWN to be good Power Supply, that has the correct amount of power cables, the right kind of power cables, the correct size, and shape of the case, and enough Wattage, for a test unit..

A bad Power Supply is one of the leading causes of computer failure.

My Dell Dimension 4600 will not turn on. Steady Amber Light


Disconnect the Power cable / A/c adapter/Battery from computer.
Disconnect External peripherials.
Hold down the power button on the computer for 10 seconds.
Reconnect the power cable or A/c adapter and battery or the computer
Try to turn on the computer
check for Led's on the computer
If still no display ,shut down the computer,disconnect power cable.
Open the computer tower,remove memory modules,reconnect power cable and turn on the computer.If you get a beeping sound after turning on you should be getting beeping sound suggesting the mother board is not bad.Turn on the computer and disconnect power cable from computer.
Reseat 1 memory at a time if you have 2 memory module or if single memory module reseat in different memory slot,swap memory module.
Reconnect the power cable and turn on the computer if it boots to desktop possible issue with 1 of the memory module.
Disconnect the harddrive ide cable from the harddrive .Turn on the computer.
If still unable to power on .Shutdown the computer and disconnect power cable.Remove video card,sound card ,modem card if any .Connect just the vga cable from monitor to the integrated video port.
Connect power cable and turn on the computer.
If computer turns on possible issue with one of PCI or PCI express card.
If still unable to power on.Disconnect the power connector pin from the motherboard and reconnect it back.Turn on the computer check power power led on motherboard,also check if the processor fan is spinning. if no go then issue with motherboard.

Tower problems


You may need to replace the cmos battery, its a cr2032 3v button cell
Make sure all your expansion cards and memory are reseated.
Make sure all cables are reseated.
your power supply could be bad

If that doesn't work try this


Here is my fix for the dell dimension 4400 amber light problem. It works!
replace cmos battery.
then unplug power cord form wall about 5-10 secs.
then plug it back in, wait 5 secs.
If amber light comes on, press and hold power button until it goes out.

(with light out, press and hold power button while amber light comes on and goes off again holding power button 2-3 secs after light goes out.) repeat whats in parenthesis until computer turns on
it should only take about 6, 7 tries.

After the computer boots, you may want to setup cmos or boot into windows.
After you shutdown, unplug power cord for 5-10 secs then plug it back in.
Press and hold the power button, computer should come on.
I found that's the only way to turn on the computer.
If you shutdown and don't unplug power cord the computer may not boot, mine didn't.

Your power supply is bad--you will need to replace. I suggest looking at tigerdiect for a replacement.

Dell Dimension 4400 Won't Turn On


inside the pc there should be a green light. called flea light. if its not on.. then id say motherboard or power supply are bad.
take power cord off. and hold power button down for 10 ecs. then reconnect and retry. i think its abad psu.

It's a dreadful way to start a day - you press the power button on your computer and nothing happens. Do not fear because all may not be lost! Follow these simple steps to determine why your computer won't turn on.

Note: It is very important to troubleshoot any issue beginning with the most likely and easily testable problem so be sure to follow these steps in order.

Time Required: Anywhere from 10 minutes to a few hours or more depending on why the computer won't turn on
Here's How:

As silly as it may sound, the number one reason why a computer won't turn on is because it wasn't turned on! Before starting a sometimes time consuming troubleshooting process, make sure you've turned on every power switch and power button associated with your computer:
Power button/switch on the front of the computer's case.
Power button/switch on the front and/or back of the monitor.
Power switch on the power supply on the back of the computer.
Power switch on the power strip or surge protector (if you have one).

Verify that the power supply voltage switch is correctly set. If the input voltage for the power supply does not match the correct setting for your country, your computer may not power on.

Check for loose computer and monitor power cable connections. A loose or unplugged power cable is one of the top reasons why a computer doesn't turn on.

Perform a "lamp test" to verify power is being provided. Your computer isn't going to turn on if it's not getting power so you need to make sure that the power source is working properly.

A damaged power supply could be preventing the computer from being properly powered.

Do a quick test of the power supply by holding your hand behind the power supply fan located at the rear of the case. If the power supply is working, you should feel air from within the case blowing against your hand. If not, you may need to replace the power supply.

Tip: Is the power light on the front of the computer's case on? If you've turned the power switch on but the light is off, this is another good indication that the power supply is the cause of this issue.

Over time, internal components and the cables that connect them can wiggle loose which can often times result in a computer unable to power on. Try reseating the following and then try to power on the computer again:
Reseat the internal cables
Reseat the memory modules
Reseat the video card
Reseat other expansion cards

Reseating the CPU may also be necessary but should only be attempted if the reseating of all other components is not successful. This is due to the fact that this process is a little more involved and can run a small risk of damage to the CPU. This isn't a big concern if you're careful, so don't worry!

Check for causes of electrical shorts in the computer case. This is often the cause of the problem when the computer powers on for a second or two but then powers off completely.

Most monitors have a small light next to the power button that can change between various colors. If the screen is blank, this light is your main source of information about the monitor.

If this light is not on at all, double-check the power switch and connections (Steps 1, 2 and 3) and also make sure the monitor cable is securely plugged in to the video card port on the back of the computer case. If the light is still off, replace the monitor. If it comes back on, try starting your computer again - a loose or unplugged monitor cable may have been the issue all along.

An amber or yellow power light simply means that the monitor is not receiving any information from the computer. In and of itself, this doesn't tell us much.

On the other hand, if the light is amber or yellow, the computer power light is on, and the hard drive is active (making familiar sounds and the hard drive activity light on the computer case is blinking), the computer is probably starting normally but the video card is not sending information to the monitor. Replace the video card.

Beep codes (see Step 11) usually sound when a video card has malfunctioned but this is not always the case.

Is your computer making a beeping sound? Sometimes a computer will turn on just enough to play a series of beeps from the speakers.

These beep codes play in particular sequences and represent a specific problem that your computer is having. Troubleshoot the beep code to figure out what it's saying and then service the computer as necessary.
