While configuring the router if your router is wireless then in the wireless tab you must have an option to set security and there you have to make Security settings then click on save changes may be someone had hacked ur wireless connection as most of the peoplee use to give there 10 digit tel no as password .
Please let me know the brand name of router as well as the model no i believe it is linksys WRT54G.

First of all are you talking about a secure wireless connection. if you aren't, then what it means is using an encryption key to secure your wireless connection. any computer connecting to your router can connect wirelessly and use your connection to do whatever they want unless you secure it. let me know a little more details and i will help you get it all set right.

Network Key (WEP, WPA, WPA2 Encryption key) To connect your computer to a wireless router, you click the Refresh network list, then Choose your wireless network and then click Connect to your secured Wireless Network, it will asks for a Network Key before allowing you to connect into your wireless network. This Network Key is either the WEP, or WPA or WPA2 Encryption key that is configured in the Wireless settings in the Router. The Passphrase is an alternate way to setup the Encryption key.
When you are requested for a Network Key, you can just enter the Passphrase or WPA or WPA2 key that was used to configure the Encryption key in the wireless router. http://www.fixya.com/support/r5270415-network_password_network_address For information on securing your wireless network, configuring the wireless router and configuring the wireless card in the laptop/computer, please click on this link and follow my instructions :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

Hi danielle,
I see you are connecting a mobile phone using a wireless link in you home.
on the d-link setting make sure that the Network security is turned Off and that the wireless module is turned on the D-link Router to be able to get the signal from your Iphone the network security can only be used on Laptops when turned on but on mobile phones if the netwrok security is turned on mobile phone may have issues connecting to the Router.
I hope this helps.
Have a nice day,

The PC connects to the Internet because it uses a network cable that is attached to the router.
The laptop connects to the router with a wireless connection, you most likely have enabled encryption on the router's wireless settings and if the laptop's wireless card has not been configured with the router's encryption settings, then it cannot connect to the router via the wireless until you enter the encryption (security) key.

Just got new modem and router, main PC on home

Right-click the network connection and click REPAIR, see if that resolves.
If you are getting a Valid IP address (192.168.x.x) then that should help. If you are getting a (169.254.x.x) APIPA address, then you are not getting network connectivity. That may involve the Wireless Security Key, or the security protocol (If using WPA the card in a 1100 may not support that protocol)

We installed our router some time ago believing it was secure

right, goto admin on the belkin by entering 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 Select Security and select either WEP or WPA or WPA2 enter your password. Reboot the router. Find your Network (belkin54g ??) Now goto the laptop or DEsktop and change the connection to reflect the security mode used and the password. if you cannot connect I suggust you add a Ethernet cable from the PC to the router and enter the admin address shown above and recheck your auth type and password. Regards GeWiz.

Belkin router

I'm guessing that your laptops are using a wireless connection. If this is the case the first time you enter the wireless security key (password) it will be stored in the laptop so you don't need to enter it again.

To connect to the router, you need to open its associated web page which you will normally find by typing the routers IP address into the address bar in Internet Explorer. The usual default address for a Belkin router is 192.168.2.1.

Once you connect to the router you should be able to access all the security settings from the Belkins main menu.

SECURITY ISSUE ON LAPTOP- UNSECURED ON NETWORK

You didn't specify what router you are using and what type of connection. I assume you are using wireless connection from your laptop. What you need to do is setup security on your router. I can't give you any specifics because I don't know the model of your router. Please read documentation and try to go to wireless security on your router and setup 64-bit WEP then specify 10-digit code. Save your configuration. Try to connect your laptop to the network. If it prompts specify the same WEP security then enter the same 10-digit code. It should work.

Good luck!

D-link router connection problems

I'm guessing you're saying you've left the security open on the pc's, but what about the router? You can connect to most wireless routers with a TCP/IP cable. Try that and see if you can check your wireless router's settings. It may have some security settings enabled.
