I have a Rheem RT-36-ACU-N that acts like it needs a blower motor. Also I am replacing the AC unit this fall with one that has a higher SEER number. Can the motor be replaced with one that will have a...

Yes, but why more cfm? you need the proper cfm to match the tonage higher cfm wont accommodate your present blower wheel .have a load calculation done. A reputable contractors will do it for free as long as ya buy from them you will be happier with a prorerly sized unit. Good Luck Tom

Central air unit

Make sure you let the blower run for a while after it freezes to make sure there is no more ice. Then run the unit. Check the refrigerant lines the large copper line that has insulation on it should be cold to the touch. If it runs for 10 minuits and is barely cold or warm you are low on refrigerant. If its starts out nice and clod then check your filter and retun ductwork for blockage you should not have noisy return air vents or that can indicate you have too small a return.

Also are the outdoor unit and indoor coil a match? Same tonage?
Is the furnace big enough to handle the tonage? (fan size)

Power consumption excessively high

Yes a higher SEER can help reduce electric costs. However. In most cases this will require changing both the indoor and outdoor units. In other words if you have a 10 SEER matched system and only upgrade the outdoor unit to a 14 SEER you will not get exactly 14 SEER efficiency. They must match.

Before excepting bids on new equipment I would first higher a licensed company to measure the Heat gain/loss from you house. This information will tell you if the current system was originally sized correctly. The improper sizing can lead to high electric bills as well. I hope this helps.

Air conditon units

the higher the seer the more efficent it is no matter the tonage of the unit

make sure that the tonage is correctly sized for the home rule of thumb is if the home is insulsted properly 600 sq feeet per ton
oversizing creates shot cycles real cool then warm real cool then warm, under size unit runs all the time
