No image is displayed

Using any of the Adapters, and inserting film, no image is ever displayed.
Firmaware 1.31
Nikon Scan Ver 3.1.2
Adaptec ASPI32 with AHA2930CU
as a result the Nikon Scan software locks-up.
Also, using the SA20, the neg strip is driven into the scanner, but the drive motor continues to drive and no image nor alarm is generated. I suspect there is no "Light Source". Can it be proven?

lift the scanner cover about half inch to see. check your usb cable.
