It sounds like to me then gears or of in tiller you will probably have to tear it down to get to it. I had to do that once on a sears tiller it is a pain but can be done when u tear it down u mine as well change the chain or belt inside while u have it apart u can go on sears web site and get a diagram that shows how everything goes together might want to have it handy when u tera it down

Ryobi ry64400 tiller tines won't move engine runs fine

then you need to open the gear box and find out why if it has a forward and reverse the the shifting linkage it could be stuck in one gear and adding the other will lock it up as well

I need to change the gear shift that broke off in the transmission do i have to split it open all the way to change it

Craftsman tillers usually use a chain drive transmission. Sears does not usually offer individual parts for these transmission. They want you to replace the entire trans assembly. If the gear shaft is available ( , then yeas, you would have to split the case all the way open to replace it. This is not an easy job. Most major repair shops would charge 4 or 5 hours of shop time for this repair. It generally requires complete dissassembly of the tiller to remove the transmission.

You did not give a model # for your tiller, so I am only giving you general solutions. Please look up the parts. Many times it is more cost effective to replace your tiller than it is to repair it. Remember that all of the other gear shafts are the same age as the one that broke and have been through the same stresses.

Good luck!

Were is the shift solenoid located on the trams. 1998 caravan

It can found on the right front of the tran's case. Look down between trans and radiator ( there will a large electrical connector attach to it.)
