Remove the Bios battery, (looks like a coin on the motherboard). you need to do this with the power cable unplugged. wait for about 30 seconds then replace the battery. then connect power and boot up, you will still have invalid configuration. but you should be able to get into setup as the password will have been cleared. you can then load the default settings (optimised if possible) usually be pressing f9 in the bios. hopefully that should do it.

try changing the PSWD Jumper from 1-2 to 2-3 for about 5 secs, (change it back afterwards)

I've seen on the forums that the PSUs, capacitence can keep feeding enough power for the BIOS not to default, some people have real problems with these. try removing power & BIOS battery, change the PSWD jumper, last resort is to insert CMOS battery upsidedown, REMEMBER to undo all these changes before plugging back in again.

Tis seems to be a problem with your BIOS. I will suggest you to open the CPU tower and take out the CMOS battery. It is located on the mother board. And it looks like a coin. Just take out the battery and put it back and all will be fine.

I removed my battery from my Dell Dimension desk top, waited and then put battery back in and started my computer.

When you removed the battery your computer lost all of it's configuration settings. You have to go into the set-up menu and and select the devices that are installed on your computer. Such as floppy drive, CD drive, DVD drive. Also have to set date and time.

ESC Key BIOS Password removing procedure

2. Enter the correct password, and press the Enter key. The computer will display "Valid password entered, system is now starting up. Check system. Then press (F1) key"
3. Press the F1 key. The BIOS setup program will appear.
4. Using the arrow keys or the tab key, move to the password field, and highlight REGISTERED.
5. Press the spacebar, enter the correct password, and press the Enter key. The Password field will change to NOT REGISTERED.

F2 Key BIOS Password removing procedure

1. Starting with the computer fully off, turn it on by pressing and releasing the power button. Immediately and repeatedly tap the F2 key. The unit will display the "Password = " prompt.
2. Enter the correct password, press the Enter key. (You may need to press the F2 key after you hit the enter key.)
3. The BIOS setup program will appear.
4. Using the arrow keys, move to the Security tab, and to Set User Password.
5. Press the F5 or the F6 key to navigate to the Password section. Enter the current password at the Old Password prompt, and press Enter. At the New Password prompt, press Enter (without typing anything into the password field). At the Confirm Password prompt, press Enter again (without typing anything into the password field). The password should now be removed.
6. Press F10 to save and exit from the BIOS Setup program.

Power-on password forgotten! How can the computer be started?

The Power on Password is set from the BIOS configuration. Ask that person who borrowed your Compaq for the password. Once you have this password, you can enter the BIOS configuration and remove/disable this password.
Depending how old you Compaq is, removing the BIOS battery and main battery for 15+ mins may remove this password and restore the BIOS to the factory default (insert both batteries again) and configure the BIOS Date and Time etc.
BUT if the the password is stored on an EEPROM chip then removing will not fix this problem. There are no backdoor passwords available.

My laptop does not open windos xp

The password issue will require you to contact Dell Technical Support for a Master Password (this will require you to prove that you are an authorized user). 800-624-9896

The error message will require a reinstallation of Windows and may be an indication of a failing hard drive.
