Question about Whirlpool GHW9100L Front Load Washer

1 Answer

My washer began a grinding noise & says

My Whirplool front load duet washer began a grinding noise & says ''F02'' which the manual says is a drainage problem. We have taken off the panel door checked the filter,(very clean)checked all hoses, screens, no problem. Still have water in machine. We followed directions to press/cancel pause twice & reset to drain spin. It still doesn't drain & starts making a grinding sound. Pressing cancel does not stop machine so we have to unplug it. Also door will not open. We opened by reaching up on the inside of the panel behind lock to pull lever to open. I have water sitting inside washer. Please give any advice to avoid having to call a repairmen. Could this be an electrical problem & if so which part should be replaced. My husband could fix it if we know which part or wires. My model is GHW9100LW1 & is probably the original. Purchased about 6-7 yrs ago. PLEASE HELP! Thank you for your response.

"F02" is a Long Drain error. If the drain time exceeds 8 minutes this error code will be displayed. In addition, a "SUDS" error may also be generated as a secondary error. This is an indication of a drain pump problem and/or clog in the drain line. You will need to check the following:

1. Check the drain hose to make sure it is not kinked or clogged.
2. Check the electrical connections to the pump and ensure the pump is running.
3. Remove the drain pump filter and check for foreign objects and/or debris.

To check the drain pump, click on the following link for step-by-step instructions.

If the above procedures do not correct the problem, it is recommended by the manufacturer to replace the drain pump

Whirlpool front loader duet hd washer gets stuck in the wash cycle with the error code of F02. What is F02 mean?

Whirlpool Duet front-load washer F02 usually means it is taking over 8 minutes for the washer to sense that the rinse or wash water has drained, which either means that the drain/filter is clogged or the pressure switch/tube is clogged (causing both the washer to over-fill with water and not sensing that water has drained).

To clear out the drain/filter, tilt the washer backwards a little for easier to the kick-plate and support the front bottom with a wood block or similar, remove the front kick-plate's (3) retaining screws and swing the kick-plate up out of the way. The filter drain is behind the white knob in the center, be prepared with something to catch any remaining water and lots of towels to soak up any spills, and turn the knob counter-clockwise to remove the filter.

F/02 Long Drain
If the drain time exceeds 8 minutes, the water valves are turned off and "F/02" is flashed.

Press PAUSE/CANCEL twice to clear the display.
  • Check the drain hose and make sure it is not plugged or kinked.
  • Check the electrical connections at the pump and make sure the pump is running.
  • Check the drain pump filter for foreign objects.

Flashing F2

“F02” (Drain Problem)
Select PAUSE/CANCEL twice to cancel the cycle. Unplug
washer or disconnect power.
Check the following:
Is the drain hose kinked?
Is the drain hose frozen?
Is the drain hose clogged?
Is the drain hose more than 96" (2.4 m) above the floor?

After running this check list, plug back up and try a complete cycle using cold water and no detergent. Sudding can mimic a drainage issue as well. make sure you are using the correct HE detergent to prevent over sudding.

Q. "It seems to have a sort of oscillating grinding noise. Would a malfunctioning pump cause this problem? That seems easy enough to replace."

A. Yes the pump could be the cause of your problem....and especially if it is making a grinding noise.....If it was me I would replace the Pump....good luck
