Question about GE Cooktops

2 Answers

I have two burners that fail to spark when the control knobs for them are turned on. However, they do spark when another burners is activated. It so happens that when one burner is turned on all of the burners for ge spark at the sametime. Maybe other gas cooktops are the same way. I haven't any experience with others, I have taken the unit apart and but the burners together temporarily and all of the burners worked great. When I but the unit back together permanently these two burners refuse to work. Is there a grounding problem? I can't seen anything that wrong electrically.

On at least five occasions when walking past the stove my husband and I had brushed up against the knob, not realizing it and the burner went on. Twice it was turned on without a flame, my husband realized this after smelling gas. Home Depot sent a repair man and later told us there was nothing wrong with true stove. This is very dangerous.

Due to recent changes in the way FixYa experts LOCK premiums - you, the customer sometimes are put through "non-experts" attempts to try and steal a quick premium by posting one-line answers.

Most of these "experts" do not have command of the english language, and either cut and paste nonsense from other sites unrelated to the question - or give one line "placeholders". If the customer does not accept or refuse an answer - after 7 days it is auto closed, and that expert is paid the fee.
They bank on answering 500 questions per month, and if 25% of customers do not request a refund - they get around $125.

In some third-world countries that is a month's pay!!

We used to all see the question, and post our ansers/suggestions - and one line answers like the one you, unfortunaltely, got could be quickly dismissed and other correct answers could be seen.
Now we select answers and they are locked to the expert ONLY for 30 minutes... and other experts are not able to see any other expert's answers.

The majority of Experts on FixYa are sincerely here to help people. We are not in office cubicles somewhere in maylasia - we are doing this from our homes or repair businesses as a way to make a little side monies.

Fixya pays us less than half of the fee you are charged.

I apologize for the previous answer - Now let's try to solve your problem.!! :D

The first item we usually ask for is the model # of your GE stove... so we can attempt to find a service schematic.

Generally speaking, however, on most gas stoves - Sparkers will all fire regardless of which burner is to be used or which knob is turned on to ignite a burner. All sparkers will fire.

If they (sparkers) are visable by being alongside the burners and not producing sparks which are visable but in fact clicking, there is a short circuit in the system. the electrical power is not getting to the sparkers electrodes.

The spark may be shorting out through or at the side of the ceramic and/or through a wire where the insulation coating is damaged, at a point where a wire connection is made and/or at a terminal end, etc.

Point above is, there is likely to be a short circuit and/or electrical grounding condition, etc. where the electrical current is not making it to the spark ignitors electrode end.

Please read through THIS SITE. It is very helpful in troubleshooting gas stoves - without having to re-type everything here.

If you have the electrical schematic, or know of a link to download it, it would be very helpful too. Generally GE does not share service information to anyone but GE service personnel.

If you require additional help, please use the "continue with this expert" option so we are connected again in the future.

Thanks for using FixYa!!

Sometimes it can be as simple as replacing the Spark module - as this seems to be giving you difficulties.

With the model # I can give you direct links for parts.

The spark module is in the ignition circuit for the gas burners. When a burner control knob is turned to the Lite position, it provides voltage to the spark electrodes on the gas burners. If the spark module fails to provide the electrodes with voltage, then it should be replaced.

The problem is the burners switch the the single burners has failed, this will cause is not to fire the module and ignite the burner. I would replace just that burner switch to correct the problem. When you call for parts, make sure you have the complete model number and possible color of that burner switch needed. They make or have available switch that are sold by color, so color may be needed for this model.

I hope this helps.

Igniter doesn't spark on only one burner

There are three parts to the ignition system typically.

The ignitor that is either in the burner or outside the burner.

The spark ignitor switch that is located on the burner control. (( one for each control ))

The spark modual. the modual creates the hi-voltage spark.

If the burner that does not ignight with its control does not spark but does spark with one of the other controls then the spark ignitor control switch is bad.
You can test it with one of the other burner control knobs. (( just try a working burnder and when it clicks look at the bad burners ignitor and look for the spark.))

If the bad burner that wont ignight does not spark then either your modual is bas or the ignitor is shorting out.

If you see any little spark but it does not spark from point A to Point B like the other burners then your ignitor is shorting and should be replaced.

If your ignitor is ceramic and it is cracked, then it should be replaced.

Thanks for using FixYa. There are a few things to check for. Make sure the electrode (the small metal piece that the spark comes off from) is clean and the holes in the burner are clean, use a pin or paper clip to clean out the burner holes and not a tooth pick as these can break off and make things worse. Example of a burner. The next thing to check for are the ignition switches under the surface control knobs, the switches can twist and break and keep the spark module on and the spark keeps "clicking" even when the burner is light. If every thing looks good, you may have a bad spark module, replace it.
The switches or the range control knobs may have got wet and are completing the circuit to the spark module thus causing it to continuously click or fire off sparks continuously. Use your hair/blow dryer and blow some hot air around the spark module area.

This is a typical spark module wire diagram--

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Dead burner on kitchenaid gas cooktop?

it is strange that you have no gas and no spark! if you held a match to the burner and turned the burner valve on it would lite di spite a failed ignitor, but for it not to lite, the burner valve[its what the knob attaches too] would have to be blocked[thats rare]or ........i got it .....the knob is broken.thats the only thing the burner valve and the spark ignitor have in common.try a knob from another have spark, because others are working.spark on troubled burner would work if valve blocked at orifice outlet, and if spark failed you would still get gas they work independent of each other,[but in unison].thats why im thinking knob.its the item that works both .when you turn the knob it opens the gas valve and as the gas valve rotates by turning the knob it activates or turns the spark switch so it closes the curcit allowing the electricty to the spark moduel.hey i hope that helps a little. God bless ,tom
