Question about Acer Aspire One PC Notebook

1 Answer

Acer Aspire One 10.1" vertical line down the center of the screen

I got my Acer Aspire One 10.1 netbook about a month ago. I have since upgraded the RAM to 2gb and the HDD to a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500gb. Everything has worked flawlessly until this morning I turned it off to go to work, and then turned it back on when I got to work. After it was on for about three minutes, the vertical line appeared. I tried a number of things, including removing all peripherals and powering it back up. But, no matter what I try, it is still there. Everything else about the computer functions fine, it's just an extreme annoyance now. Bad screen? Or, maybe a bad video chip?

Ok...I have attached the laptop to the external monitor, and there is no line present. I also swapped out the RAM module with the original, and again with the upgrade, and no difference. I'm leaning heavily toward a faulty LCD.

To determine if you have a faulty LCD screen or a faulty video card, connect an external monitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first the the laptop. The video output should automatically switch to the external monitor. If you get a normal image then the video card is OK, and the fault is with the LCD screen.
If you still get a bad image, then the fault could be a faulty video card or video RAM. Most laptops use part of the main RAM module for video RAM, try reseating the RAM modules and or test the RAM modules. If the RAM is OK then the fault is the video card.

Once you determine the likely fault then I have a further suggestion.

System recovery boot

The Acer Aspire line of netbooks have two methods to restore the computer to a working state: System Restore, an application included with Windows, or Acer eRecovery Management, a proprietary application that is packaged with Acer PCs.

If errors appear when running Windows, or if the computer begins to behave strangely, first run System Restore to determine whether reverting the PC to a previous state fixes the problem.
If the problem remains unresolved, or worsens, you can use Acer eRecovery Management to format the hard drive and reload the Acer Aspire netbook to its factory state.

Navigate to the "Start" menu. Select the "Control Panel."
Type "restore" into the Search box.
Press "Enter" then select "Restore Your Computer to an Earlier Time" from below the "Action Center."
Click "Open System Restore."
Click "Next" on the "Restore System Files and Settings" screen.

Select a restore point that was created when the computer was functioning properly. Click "Next," then click "Finish."
Click "Yes" to confirm.
Windows will perform a system recovery on the Acer Aspire One.

Acer eRecovery Management

Turn on the Acer netbook. Hold down the "Alt" and "F10" buttons simultaneously on the boot screen to load Acer eRecovery Management from the recovery partition.

Select "Restore Operating System to Factory Defaults" from the options.

Click "Next" to recover the system to its original state.

Acer aspire 1 netbook won,t boot up.

Hi
When you first turn the machine on hit F2, that will take you into the bios menu, i don't know what version your machine is using, but the information is usually on the first page, you should find it easy enough because it will be next to the CD/DVD drive.
