The blade does not tighten on the spindle and just spins freely. Even tightened down the center nut does not make a good connection to the blade.

There is a positioning "washer" that needs to be in place. If you don't line up the blade and position the washer it will not tighten. The blade will just spin around. Some even have a washer in front and in back. Be sure you have correct diameter of arbor that matches your blade too.

Why can't the mounting nut be tightened?

The blade may not have been reinstalled correctly and/or the nut may have gotten cross-threaded or stripped in the proces

Why can't the screw be tightened?

First of all, the blade has to be seated correctly on the spindle and the screw hand tightened to hold it in place. Next, a locking device such as a screwdriver has to be inserted crosswise between two teeth to prevent the blade from rotating. With the blade locked, the screw can be tightened. Finally, be sure to remove the locking device before operating the saw.

I have a Husqvarna Z4217 was cutting and blades started making a rattling noise so I cut it off checking the blades the one on the right is loose but when I try to tighten it the pulley turns the blade...

You can use a block of wood and I even locked mine with a pair of vice grips or if there is room a pipe wrench. It would help to take it completely off and squirt some oil on the threads and start over then when you sharpen the blades they will be easy to take off later. I would sharpen the blades before you do this as well.

Mtd engage blades it smokes and make noise

Have you physically moved each blade by hand (with the machine shut-off),spark plug disconnected to see if both or all of the cutting blades move freely if there is any binding you probably have a bad blade spindle bearing . If those move o.k. then you're going to want to check the pulleys on top of the deck, one of these which do not go to the blades may possibly have a bad bearing and is not moving freely causing the belt to be burning up.

The blade on my B&D sawcat spins even with nut tightened. cold it be the blade is worn, but i put a new blade on and it doesnt spin as freely but still spins

Hole in the blade is greater than spindle on the saw, you did not put bush washer/reducer in, or if that bit is correct, you are puting holding nut wrong way in.

Do not use saw till you rectify the problem, switch off the saw, remove power cord from socket.

1. raise saw table up for maximum cut
2. retract slide-in protector to maximum
3. remove nut from spindle, following by blade (and bush if used)
4. check internalholding washer if it is correctly inserted.
5. orient correctly internal washer (it have notch or notches and will go freely only one way - check if that is the case)
6. insert blade, with reducing bush if required
7. if external washer is used put it in
8. screw in the holding nut, hand tighten and check mobility of the blade, tighten up about 1/8 to 1/4 turn with spanner, this should be sufficient to hold blade in place without any slipage. If slipage is still present, you are doing something wrong, you need then to supply me with exact model and I will describe exact part look and order in which they must go in.
9. connect to electrical outlet
10. short switch on and off
11. check blade for wandering and slipage, if none then make test cut
12. use as usual if 11 is correct

Hope this will solve your problem :-)

MTD 42" CUT MOWER MODEL 42A707 TYPE 1238 01 CODE960 2085A. 1) Mower blades do not stop spinning when deck is raised all of the way. 2) Left blade intermitantly makes a horrible noise when cutting grass...

I think either the bolt holding the left blade onto the spindle is loose, or the cup washers under that bolt are flattened or missing. As a result, the blade is slipping on the shaft and probably making a squeal or squawk. Take off the deck, flip it over, and remove the blades. Note if the bolts seem tight. And look at the washers stacked under the bolts. Replace any missing washers, or flattened cup washer. Make sure the cup washer faces the right way (hollow side toward the blade). Tighten things back up securely - it takes a hefty pull on the end of a 2 foot long wrench to get enough torque.

The newly purchased deck belt turning the blades is extremely loose

If idler is in tact and spring attached, it is likely that the belt isn't routed properly. If you try to route the rear-most portion of the belt around the idler, it will be loose. You must route the front-most portion of the belt around the center blade pully and then around the idler. Just Google "MTD 46 inch deck diagram" and you will go to a Parts Tree site with the proper diagram showing routing.
