We have a the above mentioned Honda engine attached to a 2'' water pump used to pump out the holding tanks of boats. For a while now when we start it will run for about a minute, start running rough and then stall out. It can be restarted again, right away, and the same thing will happen. We have installed a new filter in the tank, replaced the carburetor, removed the head to clean and inspect the valves (they look great) reassembled everything and the same problem exist.
I don't know where to go from here. This problem started out slow and has gotten progressively worse to where it is today. After a few starts the spark plug is fouled black like it may be running too rich.
The gx 120 is only 3.5 hp, that's not a lot. For a 2" pump I would want twice that. You could look up engineering specs on other 2" pumps to see what they use. I've seen lawn mowers with more hp.

you mean the engine, overheats then the engines stalls.? that latter symptom is normal for overheating.
(some exceptions, ) my Corvette drops cylinders, 1 by 1 to stop this.(but is still bad , if this happens)
does it overheat only stopped, only moving or both? (KEY question)
fix the over heat, cause. there are may ways to overheat. from simple to comlex. and no web bunny on earth can guess it. unseen. ill list the simple: 1: low on coolant, no not the side tank, the actual rad is low, check only on dead cold engine, below 125F (AZ temp) 2: bad RAD cap. not holding pressure. 3: wrong coolant mix or mixing 1 color coolant with another (bad) 4: water pump belt bad , or slipping or missing. 5: rad tubes clogged 6: fan dead, 7: RAD outside ofcore, blocked with filth. 8: blown head gasket,(or far worse) 9: bad water pump. 10: leaks anywhere, (this really is first)
one site that lists them all , every one,... is http://www.fixkick.com/overheating.html
water in fuel. put some water remover or gas line antifreeze in and keep tank full. the reason its worse after sitting is because the water sinks to bottom of tank and then the car is trying to run on just water. after driving it mixes with fuel
If you believe all the above mentioned are good, I would check the neutral switch (believe the 250 has one), which cuts off the engine at increasing rpm if not working correctly. Sensor tells computer if the transmission is in neutral to avoid the over rotation in the engine.
could be the fuel computer under the dashboard. Could also be the electric pump in the tank. If you are lucky, as is often the case, it is not the pump, but the little rubber hose attached to that pump in the tank. Your car has 2 pumps, one in the tank, a submersible sending pump. The other is the main fuel pump under the hood. The tank one is easier to swap. There is an inspection plate in the trunk. You lift it out and then pull the unit by twisting the bung. I suspect the problem is here due to the fact you mention keeping it half full.
Sounds like fuel starvation. there is a small filter insde the tank. if you take the tank off you will see that where the fuel hose attaches to the tank. this spigot unscrews from the take to reveil the filter.
Hope This helps
The one thing you did not mention was the type of spark your recieving at the spark plug. I recommend that a spark tester be used, which can be purchased at an auto parts store. Set the spark plug tester gap for 10,000 volts, or a good 3/8". You should see a nice sharp blue spark. If you are recieving this kind of spark, then with valves closed or at top dead center apply 30 psi into the cylinder. This test will let you know if the valves are seated properly. If valves are not seated properly you will hear the air come out from the intake or exhaust. So, it is either your ingnition coils or warped valves.
they are designed wih presure need to be in tank when you fill the car with engine runnig the gas cap removal will cause the engine to stall especially one with a week fuel pump.
I have similiar problem on small concrete extruder machine.
