You have to pick the cds yourself, the drive does not know what you like so it won't spend your money.

Look for a small hole next to the CD player, if there is one, use a tooth pick and push the reset/ eject button in and see, if it will eject the CD while it is on.

Toshiba portege m100. lost windows xp. how do I clean install windows. no cd drive only usb ports. will not boot pxe.tried windows on formated flash drive, still no result.

Making a bootable flash drive involves a few tricks. I have had much better success using a utility to do the setup on those. Doing it manually works but not all the time.

I'd beg borrow or buy a usb dvd drive and boot off the install cd if nothing else. These have really dropped in price and are handy to have around.

I'm assuming you have set the bios to boot from the flash drive before it hits the hard drive? You would also have to set it to hit the usb dvd drive prior to the hd as well if you go that way.

When you get it booted it will ask if you want to format the drive before installing. You can also just pick a new directory to put windows in as well.

Don't forget to download all the drivers from Toshiba. You will need system info, video, and a network at the very least to get running and able to download the rest. These are very handy on a flash drive to plug in when you get xp started.

My CD/DVD drive won't read/play DVDs and it won't write DVDs either. It used to do this fine, but it doesn't anymore. It will still play and write CDs, but not DVDs. I have tried EVERYTHING to...

You probably will need to replace the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) in your laptop. Go to Google and search for "Dell Inspirion 6000 CD/DVD drive" to find a replacement.
To be sure it's the CD/DVD drive that's defective and not your operating system software, you could also try to boot from a boot-able DVD disk.

My dvd and cd rom does not pick up dvd but only cd's

Is it really a DVD drive? DVD drives can pick both with ease but a CD drive cannot pick DVD's.

Compaq Armada e500 won?t recognize the cd drive

Simple things first: Assuming the CD drive is removable, remove it from the laptop then re-iinsert it making sure it's pushed home properly so that the connectors seat properly.

If, again, the drive is in a bay (i.e. it's removable) then it may be the connectors are worn/damaged. If it's the drive connector then it may be repairable or you might pick up another drive, perhaps on eBay. It may also be that the drive has simply given up the ghost - so back to eBay :) If the connectors on the laptop have got damaged then you're looking at dismantling the laptop to repair/replace them, if that's possible.

If it's an external drive then the advice is very similar - check out the connectors first. If they look OK then you probably have to suspect the drive itself.

For either type of drive, there is always the small chance that the IDE controller channel on the motherboard has died - I have seen this happen in rare cases. Your options then are a bit limited. IIRC, that PC has no USB2 and even if it did, it wouldn't boot from a USB CD. You can get a PCMCIA interface card (now called simply PC interface) for an external CD. Depending on the card-drive interface, you might be able to boot from that.

If you need to install software onto the machine & have another (desktop) PC to hand: remove the disc from the E500, get a 2 1/2 to 3 1/2" disc adapter & temporarily attach the drive to the desktop as a secondary (i.e. not boot) disc. You can then load software onto the drive although you can't do a Windows install that way. If the machine already has an old version of windows on it, you can copy for example, the XP install files onto the drive, put it back in the machine & run an upgrade. Not the most desirable result but may be OK.
