Maybe corrosion in the cold control. Could be a fan shutting down. When fresh food side is warming up , is fan running in freezer? My guess with the information given. A simple repair.

I just moved into this apt and it seems the refrigerator runs all the time with a hum. It is a 2006 Whirlpool.

It is vibration of compressor. Try adjusting the balance wheels at the bottom to eliminate the sound. But some humming will still ontinues.

The compressor motor runs for a short time then

you are suppose to have a multi meter and monitor the supply going to compressor, before the overload relay. if the voltage remains while it stop, your overload thus cutting the supply meaning it is overloaded. if the voltage is missing too, the problem is in the thermostat area.

Kenmore refridgerator model #50522100

Is it still working..If so it probable doesn't have a problem. My guess is that it went into the defrost cycle. When you unpluged it in 2003 it was time for the defrost cycle, so when you pluged it in it went into the cycle..
