Two computers using single port modem and second gets timed out

I've got my main computer set up with the standard 2wire 2071-A modem and that's working fine. However my bro just got a laptop and set up the modem to his laptop. The internet usually works fine for about 10 minutes or so then it locks out on his computer and I have to restart the modem and we get another 10 minutes. Is there some setting I can't find on the modem?

I don't want both computers running at once on the internet because I just disconnect mine from the modem and put his in, but it usually gets locked out after a while. Any help?

His laptop is a COMPAQ Presario CQ60 if that is any help at all.

It may need permission. If it's anything like the modern ones, it should have a web address, something like ( )
if it does then you have to log on and give the devices mac address permission to log on. Or it should be something simular to this.

SOURCE: how do i reprogram a

First, get the modem/router's setup and user manual from

After studying those, read the instructions at

After having done your homework, do the following:

1.) Port Configuration

BitTorrent clients listen (wait for) incoming connections on one of the 65535 ports of a PC, the listening port. The typical port range for the BitTorrent protocol is 6881 - 6999, which means that you should choose a port from this range as the listening port, because many other people configure their firewalls to only accept incoming connections on these ports and might consider exotic values as suspicious. Yes, many ISPs throttle the throughput for file sharing applications, but if they are serious about hindering P2P activities, there are many more sophisticated ways to identify BTs, for instance by means of analyzing traffic, packets, connection and usage statistics, etc., instead of relying on the port number only. Consequently, as long as your ISP does not interfere too much with your file sharing and/or if changing a non-standard port doesn't remedy the problems, stick with the standard port range of 6881 - 6999.

If you do choose a different value, make sure that it isn't the standard port for other Internet activities (FTP, HTTP, SMTP, etc) or even worse, known as the port used by some malware. As a rule of thumb, steer clear of the lower numbers and rather choose a higher number, because the lower ranges are often occupied by other applications. In case you are using a hardware firewall (router) and/or a software firewall, do not activate the 'randomize Ports' function but stick with the same port all the time.

In Opera, the best of all web browsers that comes equipped with an internal BitTorrent client, you can find/modify the port number by entering 'about:config' into the address bar and expanding the BitTorrent section.

2.) Software Firewall Settings

People using the MS Windows XP/Vista firewall go to Options -> Preferences -> Connection and check 'Add µTorrent to Windows Firewall'. People using other firewalls will need to refer to the respective software's documentation.

You will have to allow incoming TCP connections on the port that you chose as the listening port in your BitTorrent software. BitTorrent does not use UDP, so creating a rule for TCP only should do fine.

3.) Router Username and Password

In case your PC is protected by (connecting to the Internet through) a router, a few additional steps need to be taken in order to enable software to establish outgoing connections. Some people who do not have a separate router may find that their modem serves both as a modem and as a router, and this procedure will also apply. This is the case  with the 2Wire HomePortal Gateway 2071.
In your web browser, enter as the address (study the manual or your old notes for a different address) and have your username and password for the Gateway ready. If you can't find them and were given the modem by your ISP, you will have to call them because if you only change the password on your end, you won't be able to connect to the Internet any more. In case you need to change the password,  see the user manual for the respective hints.

4.) Router Firewall Configuration

Enter the Gateway 2071's address in your web browser's address bar, go to Firewall -> Firewall Setings and select the computer for which you want to enable port mapping.  Since 2Wire Gateways offer a maximum of four LAN ports, identifying which of the four computers is the one in question shouldn't be too hard a task.

Now click on the 'Add a new user-defined application' link  beneath the list of pre-defined applications. Define an Application name like "BitTorrent Client" and enter the listening port into both port range fields, for instance from 6885 to 6885 for the TCP protocol. For BitTorrent, everything else can remain blank/none and you click on 'Add Definition'.

The page reloads and after you went 'back', select the freshly added profile from the list of applications and click on 'Add', then on 'Done'.

It's not really that difficult, but router manufacturers somehow always **** at describing the steps properly because they never provide examples for the three typical 'problem cases' online gaming, VoIP and file sharing. Three examples in each category and millions of users wouldn't have to hunt the Internet for clues.

Good luck,

SOURCE: I need manual installation instructions (dont have

It appears to be a DSL modem. You don't need a driver, but a username and password for your internet provider. Here is how you install.
connect to phone line then usb or network port (drivers should be built in xp) open your internet browser and type to open the internal web page. It should step you through the username (email address) password. Must ask your internet provider for those.

Can I connect a second computer (not a laptop) in my bedroom wirelessly to the 2wire modem that I have connected to my main PC?

Yes, you can. just make sure that the computer has a wireless capability, if not then you need to connect a wireless adapter so you could connect the computer to your 2wire router wirelessly. Another possible way to have it hooked up to your 2wire router is via Ethernet cable but depending on the distance you may need a longer cable.

As I understand it, you currently have a DSL line with a computer plugged into a modem that is attached to the DSL. Now, you want to use wireless throughout your home.

My choice of router manufacturer is Linksys though there are other manufacturers of wireless technology.

What ever manufacturer you choose, get the device. Hook it up according to the instructions you will find inside the device box.

It will go something like this: Attach a cat 5 cable from the "uplink" port on your router to the DSL modem. Plug your wired computer into any of the 4 other ports. Everything is off, right? Cycle the modem - wait for the lights to settle down. Plug in your new wireless, wait for the lights to settle. Turn on your computer. Turn on your wireless. Wou may have to connect using the windows wizard.

A tool I use for network management is Network Magic, a Cisco product. Cisco also owns LlinkSys.

Get the program, free download and eval period. After the eval period you may purchase or continue to use the product with some features disabled.

does the computer that's directly connected to the modem connect to the internet? If not then make sure your settings are well set, your service provider (ISP) and all the other settings that your ISP supplied you have not been tempered with or modified.

Does you WDS and router communicate? Have you changed the IP addresses form the default ones that came with your devices? They usually begin with 192.. at times the default IP addresses don't work in some institutions. You can configure most DLinks using internet explorer by typing in the DLink IP address bar.

Considering your age, you need someone to show you how these things are done.

Configure D-Link Wireless N Router DIR-615 for 2wire 2071-A modem

You do not need the disc. Using you browser, login into the router using the default IP unless this has been changed and you should be able to configure your router.
login ADMIN and pass is blamk

Login in using your browser and go to the wireless settings and set-up a wireless password/key. Remember the key because each device will now need it to connect. You can also turn OFF Broadcast SSID and your network name will not be shown on anyone's device. You must remember the network name when using this method.

2WIRE Single Port DSL Line Filter

i think when you purchased the 2wire modem it usually comes along with 3 sets of single port dsl line filters, try out those other filters see which one works. if the local network light doesn't come on, (are you using 2wire 1000 series?), check the network adapters in your computer, this usually happens when you are using lower versions of OS. try the power outlet in the kitchen / bathroom, if power light doesn't come on, push the reset button for 30 secs. if power light is still off or red, then you may need to replace the modem (check if it's still under warranty, if not you will need to buy a new one.) also you should be using the same power adapter that came with the modem, check the specs. sometimes if the modem is more or less than 3 years old, they could get defective especially if it's often affected by sudden power surges.
