Water does not drain from Maytag FAV6800AWW washing machine

I need to get the water to drain from my Maytag FAV6800AWW washing machine.

Please also include the proper way to get access to the parts I need to fix. There appears to be one large piece that covers the back and the sides of the washer. There is no visible way to take either this or the front of the machine off to get access to the parts I may need to fix.

The pump seems to run ... though best I can tell its not pumping much water out. The pump runs during diagnostic modes, but it doesn't get rid of water. Running the max extract spin leaves the clothers soaking wet. The diagnostic spin test seems to run okay as well.

The back panel of the washer is connected to both side panels. It looks like I have to take off the front panel in order to take off the back panel and the side panels. There is one support for the tub/center piece hanging off one of the side panels.

It doesn't look to be critical support ... and I hope it isn't otherwise I would have to take the tub / center of the washer out, the front, and the sides to get the back off so I can get to the pump and/or pump belt to see if I can fix the problem

Its been a very nice washer when it runs right, but is designed very poorly ... unless it was a deliberate design point to make it difficult for the average home owner to try and service it him or herself.

Spent many hours yesterday on it, and though I learned to run diagnostics, I wasn't able to get to the pump to check the belt or check for blockage.

Some of the tips here, may be ultimately useful, the one to the service manual for the FAV6800AWW was helpful ... but there is a lot more work todo.

Can anyone confirm. Do I really need to take off all four sides of panels to get to the pump?

My machine gets to the first spin cycle, and then does not drain. Pump works OK in service mode.

Hello jediller,
Your drain pump is 120VAC operated turned on by the control board.
Go to page 16 of the SM and you can turn on the drain pump in Service Mode with the presoak key. Press it again to turn off the drain pump or hit the off button.
Link to some documemtation that may help you thru yout issue. The Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.
Raise the top of the machine. Insert a flat blade putty knife approximately 2.5” from the left and right sides of the washer top, depress the spring tabs securing machine top to the washer base. See page 33 of the SM for putty knife insertion point. Remove the front panel see page 41. You will need a 5/16 nut driver or 5/16 ¼ socket on an extension to remove front panel.
I’m a owner DYI’er like you. What type of issue are you experiencing? Let me know if I can help.
Pic of machine internals from the troubleshooting guide which shoild be in the machine console.

One oher point the first two digits of your machine serial number is the series of your machine. Watch for this IE S/N starts with 10 that is a series 10 model. My s/n starts with 16 for a series 16 machine. Parts like the pressure switch are series sensitive, parts like the drain pump are not.

I would take care of this ""There is one support for the tub/center piece hanging off one of the side panels."" So one of the rear tub supports item 6 in this View is not attached to the tub?

So we may have a clog in the drain system and the control board turns on the pump but not much water is exiting the tub. This is what I would do and you don’t need to remove the back/side panel it is all one piece. If you could remove the right side panel it would be easier to service the drain pump on the right rear side. If I were looking for a clog this is what I would do.

    1. I would loosen the stainless steel hose clamp 5/16 clamp screw securing the hose to the sump cap item 9 at the Sears Parts Direct parts view. Move the hose clamp down the hose (place a something under to catch/absorb excess water). Remove the hose and inspect for a clog.

    2. With a a flash light view the sump cap it can be difficult to see debris in the sump cap, it allows items like coins and a part of my debit card to get jammed in it see pic. The sump cap item 9 at the Sears Parts Direct link can be removed by rotating it toward you slightly and pulling down. If you decide to remove for inspection pay attention to the removal process for reinstall. On reinstall make sure you don’t pinch the rubber O-Ring or you may leak as mine did. On my second attempt it did install correctly.

    3. If I felt the need to remove the drain pump I would lean the washer back and block up against the wall to allow a better reach angle. I would remove the right front strut to allow a better reach clearance to remove outlet drain line hose clamp. Block up the tub as seen on page 43 of the SM, follow the SM page 44 for drain pump removal.

    4. I made up a 120VAC test cord with spade lugs to test the a spare drain pump, I will attach some pic’s of the drain pump opened up for impeller inspection.

Pic of spare drain pump I picked up on E-bay showing Impeller housing and drain pump motor.

The typical machine uses a belt-driven pump to remove water from the tub. Usually, the sides, top and front are preassembled and the rear panel attached with a few screws. The access to the innards has been from the rear on any top-loading machine I've ever seen.
The pump may be OK but the belt may be trashed; you should see the remains of it once the back panel is removed. The pumps are generally a rounded device with hoses connected to it and its replacement difficulty varies with machine brand.
Looking for parts is much easier if you locate your machine on a parts supply webpage that has 'exploded' line illustrations of the machine accompanied by the part numbers and often costs too. Sears.com has an extensive library of these drawings and they can be ordered on line.

Could be a Tub Seal leak my 1st choice. Could also be a leak caused by a cracked outer tub, issues from the hoses from the drain line connections to the drain pump, drain pump and or drain line.

Are you going to try to DIY the fix?

ND error, pump runs, but sounds rough, took pump apart and found nothing in the pump or pipe.

If the motor is running but there is no water coming through, it would suggest the pump impellor blades are compromised. It's quite posible that the shaft that drives the blades has snapped. Is it possible to open the pump housing and rotate the blades manually whilst watching the motor to see if it moves? If one moves without the other, then its a new pump I'm afraid. WARNING! Do NOT attempt to do this with the motor connected to the electricity supply.

My maytag neptune tl leaks from the bottom while it washes MODEL #FAV6800AWW it leak about two to three cups of water for each load, about one drop per second.

Possible Tub Seal leak, leak from Outer Tub, Sump Cap, Drain Pump, Drain Line.

You need to pull the front cover off the machine and ID the leak source. If there wash water over the Clutch Pulley I would suspect a Tub Seal issue.

You can't link to the Service Manual form this site.

Google Maytag Neptune load unbalance and see if you can find support for the Service Manual.

Maytag FAV6800AWW - Major overflow right after starting machine

Hi, If you turn the water source valve on and water starts filling the machine even tho the machine is off, change the inlet valve.
If you have to start the machine so water will fill but, the water does not shut off at the desired level, there is a problem with the water level switch.
I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Your drain filter is clogged with debris. Usually small items like dirt, paper, money, and much more. Clean the filter and you should be set to go.
