Question about Water Heaters

1 Answer

I have a whirlpool water heater that is about 6 years old. The model number is FG1F4034T3NV. The serial number is 0129800069. The product number is 0730125. We installed it, filled it and made sure it was working correctly. We then turned it off and drained the tank. We started using it about 4 years ago. We had to replace the thermal coupler about 6 months ago. There is now water slowly dripping onto the coupler extinguishing it. I can't believe that this tank is leaking after only 4 years. We have a whole house water filter, so I would think that would make it last longer. Is there something besides the tank that could be leaking. I hate to have to replace this after only 4 years of use. Surely Whirlpool products are better than that. What else could be causing this? There is no rust on the outside or anywhere else that I can see. Help!!!

Register water heater

Whirlpool water heaters are made by AOSmith company, which owns American, Reliance, State, Craftmaster and makes water heaters for Kenmore and Whirlpool.
These are good heaters.

Register Whirlpool product at following link:
http://www.whirlpoolwaterheaters.com/support/warrantyreg.aspx

It is not necessary to register product for warranty to be valid.
And if you move to new home and take water heater, then warranty does not follow. So it might be disadvantageous to register product in that circumstance.

You can see brand, model number, and serial number located on label on side of tank.
The serial number is unique and is key for warranty coverage, even if you lost receipt. Serial number shows year of manufacture in first two digits.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Find-Age-of-water-heater.pdf

It is not necessary to register water heater for warranty to be valid, as long as following applies: Original owner, single-family non-commercial residential installation, and installation that conforms to instructions shown in product manual, and water heater is maintained as shown in product manual.

If you purchased extended warranty, then remember the warranty is carried by a third party that also requires same as above.
And the warranty may be pro-rated, rendering it nearly valueless in later years.

Typical water heater warranty:
First year of warranty covers tank-parts-labor.
After first year, the warranty shrinks to tank-parts.
The math shows that shorter warranty tank has greater percentage of full coverage.
Convert ordinary 6 year tank into 9-12-15 year tank by maintaining water heater. Especially cleaning air intake located on bottom of tank, inspecting anode rod to prevent rusting, and following maintenance schedule shown in product manual.

Wiring diagram on whirlpool gas water heater

Whirlpool is AO Smith tank-type heater.
Year, model, type of heater not known.
So add a comment and then expert can look up the manual.

You probably have power vent, or dampered water heater, otherwise the only wiring would be for thermopile, thermal reset, and igniter.
Power vent, or dampered, of flow control water heaters plug into outlet, and wires from gas control run to the various components.
Copy following link to troubleshoot by type of gas control valve:

Don't forget to add comment and include model number that shows on label located side of tank.

I have a whirlpool water heater mod. Fg1f4034t3nv. Igniter will not work'.instructions missing. Have all lines. Etc disconected how do I get assembly out?

I don't know because I can't see it, and I don't have manual.
But I can give you resources:
Call Whirlpool:
(877) 817-6750

Whirlpool is usually Craftmaster which is American which is AO Smith.
http://www.hotwater.com/water-heaters/residential/conventional/gas/
Age of water heater shows on serial number: first two digits should be year, second two digits should be week.

The market is always changing.
Find manufacturer using label on side of tank, find manual with parts diagram, and order burner parts. Whirlppol site does not have manuals.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-manufacturers.html

It might be cheaper to install a new water heater yourself from box store for $330.00

Or take advantage of fixya expert assistance live.

I own a house with an electric GE hot water heater. 8ESOT12AA01 Serial # 090122 5750 I do not know how old the hot water heater is and advice about when it should be replaced. No leaks to date but I...

GE is made by Rheem, but the market is always changing. Rheem-based serial number shows tank was made in 1990.
Tank will last as long as anode rod(s) protects steel tank from rusting.
If your tank has two anode rods, then tanks lasts longer.
That's how companies determine if water heater is '6-year' or '12-year.'
I don't have manual for your product to say if you have 12 year tank. Side of tank might have information blurb besides mandatory label that shows serial number.
You can update your water heater by replacing anode rod(s) assuming they can be loosened and removed after this number of years, which is a big IF with old heaters. Your plumber might have impact wrench he uses to see if anode can come out.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Replace-anode-rod.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/Leaking-water-heater.html

If the water heater is making gurgling rumbling and/or crackling sounds then tank has sediment build-up.
You can also get a baseline of rust by flushing tank and watching if water is very rusty.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Clean-sediment-out-of-water-heater.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-will-not-drain.html

If you flush tank regularly, and inspect anode every 1-3 years, a tank will last many years longer than manufacturer's label.

Whirlpool 40 gallon energy smart elecrtic water heater. The control board binks once, by the panel means system start up failure, but we still have hot water, but every time we use the hot water it starts...

The evidence points to a control malfunction.
Call Whirlpool for assistance: 1-877-817-6750
You will need your model number and serial number located on label on side of tank.
Serial number is required because models change as the technology evolves.

Open following link to read product details about the Energy Smart, and download typical manual.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Whirlpool-Energy-Smart-electric.html

Note: Energy Smart water heater requires 10 gauge wire and 30 amp breaker.

Typical energy smart manual shows: 1 flash is start-up error, which indicates 'Power ON with no water in tank.'
This is not possible because at least the upper element would burn out, if not both elements.
If upper element burns out, this water heater will not make any hot water, since it is wired for ordinary non-simultaneous operation.
There cannot be air inside the tank since your hot water faucet is not spewing air.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-it-works.html

Also be aware that model numbers change.
Read following account of fellow who replaced control board on his 4-year-old energy smart, and how he discovered wires are reversed on newer control boards. Be sure to ask Whirlpool about this possibility, in the event they say control board is faulty and send you new board:

Heater says lower sescor failur what is that

1) For the best answer possible, post what type water heater you have.
Gas or electric. Tank or tankless. Undercounter, tabletop, RV, indirect, solar-assisted, etc.
Information should be on product label
Give as much information as possible so experts are not guessing.

2) If you give brand and model number (not serial number), we can possibly pull a manual that could match your product and simply read the troubleshooting steps alongside you.
This will help us give the do-it-yourselfer as much help as possible.

3) Pull out your product manual. Look at your manual for troubleshooting steps, error codes, and remedies.

4) Go to manufacturer's website and look for manual.
Most manufacturers post manuals, and those that don't are selling another manufacturer's product.

5) Whirlpool has contact us page:
