Looks like the usb connection pins are not touching the other connection pins. just check the pins touch each other surface then the data will transfer. check all four pins. if it is a standard A connector then far two pins are power supply and middle two pins are data pins.

v- data- data+ v+
the above are the pins in a standard usb connector

The transfer speed is too slow for my WD elements portable 500 gb. overnight it cannot copy 20 gb of data. what is the problem?

Possible problems include having antivirus or antispyware programs sunning that have to check all data transfers in progress. This is a massive resource load on your machine. Turn off them and adware while doing the transfers.
Another problem might be real bad fragmentation of one or both of the data devices.
When defragging, you need to do that in SAFE mode to avoid it taking days... every change it makes during defrag it goes back and runs scandisk unless you do it in safe mode.
Annother problem would be severe data errors causing error corrections continuously.

I plug my external hardrive into my labtop and its not reading it at all as if I never plugged anything in

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Try connecting it to some other computer, and see if you can retrieve it. Also try a different OS too if it does not work.

Hi there, my Western Digital External 500 GB hard drive wont get recognised - it is blinking rapidly and it was working fine a minute ago - no physical shocks etc

Try to connect to another usb slot or try on another comp if you can,if it still won't work then your HDD has hardware problem which can be solved only by a WD service.

Seagate 500 external hardrive

It could be that the PCB or the connection within the external casing has a problem.

Try disassembling it and putting the Hard Disk into another external case to see if the disk is okay, if it is then viola! you have your data back.
