Has no power. Probability of diode cause?

Stephen, Diodes are cheap, check for other burnt and bloated capacitors while your in there, cheap fix to try.

Shorted Rectifier Diode (fuse keeps blowing)

jdvillanueva_14.jpg
This CRT tv is dead set, no reaction when the power button is pressed(no standby led light). I've open the back panel and check the faulty parts.
jdvillanueva_15.jpg

As you can see the fuse was badly burnt-out indication of excessive current due to short circuit.
jdvillanueva_17.jpg

I've checked the parts feeding the AC line to the power supply board (Power cord, VDR, Ceramic capacitor, Coil, Posistor, Degaussing coil) one by one and I've found out that one of the four rectifier diode has a leak which caused the glass fuse burnt-out.
Here's how to test the rectifier diode.

Good Diode
Note : Forward and reverse bias depend on what type of ohmmeter are you using, here I'm using a Japan Standard(Sanwa Brand).
jdvillanueva_21.jpg

Using an ohmmeter set it to X10 to see much easier the leak from the diode in reverse bias.

Forward Bias : test the diode by connecting the red test prod of the tester to anode and then the black test prod to cathode of diode. You will see the pointer will reads a faily low resistance(above picture).
jdvillanueva_22.jpg

Reverse Bias : test the diode by connecting the red test prod of the tester to cathode and then the black test prod to anode of diode. You will see at the picture(above) that the pointer didn't react (remains in infinity). This is a good diode.

Bad(leaky) Diode
jdvillanueva_23.jpg

Forward Bias will reads fairly low resistance.
jdvillanueva_24.jpg

Reverse bias unlike the good diode the pointer will also reads a fairly low resistance.

After confirming that the diode caused the fuse from blowing I've decided to replaced all four diodes since I have a lots in my stocks.
jdvillanueva_25.jpg

Remember that when you installing the new diode on the board, make sure that you will make it in the right polarity.

jdvillanueva_26.jpg

This steps is also applicable in the DVD Player,Flat panel, Projection, LCD TV, you have to disregard only the posistor and degaussing coil.

Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

My TrueTone 23 channel CB won't power on when I plug it in to my truck. Everything seems to be connected properly. How do I fix this?

first check to see if the power cable wire is indeed working.make sure the fuse in the fuse holder isn't burnt . make sure there is power to where your wires are connected , fuse box or cigarette lighter plug .If there is power going to the radio then you need a volt ohm meter . You may have a burnt out reverse polarity diode . It is located where the power cord comes into the radio from the inside. It should be the only diode there but just in case check them to make sure it is a barrel shaped black diode. If it is burnt replace it and your radio should come on.

Ge microwave mod. #JVM1851BH06. i ohmed the capicitor 2 meg ohm and increased to 11 meg ohm. I also measured the diode which i believe branches off one leg of capacitor it shows open resistance O.L. both...

I'd say your diode is bad but your capacitor may be good. You need to test it further - as described below.

In order to get reliable measurements to make a determination about the condition of the components, each should have at least one lead removed from the circuit. If not, your meter will read the through the rest of the circuit - and not be limited to the diode or capacitor under test.

To check a diode: Set the meter to to the lowest scale (Rx1) and touch black (-) probe to the cathode of the diode (the end with a band around the diode body) and the red (+) to the anode lead to reverse bias the diode. The meter should indicate "OL" or high resistance. Reverse the meter probes so that RED (+) is on the cathode lead and black (-) is on the anode to forward bias the diode. The meter should read a very low resistance - approaching 0 ohms. Diodes should conduct in one direction only - and the other is should look "open" If it conducts or is open in both directions, it is defective. Zener diodes can be checked with an ohm meter, but need a variable voltage supply and are required to be in a circuit (instead of out of circuit like a standard diode) for accurate testing. A link to zener diode testing here.

To check a capacitor: Set the meter to the lowest scale (Rx1) and touch probes to capacitor leads. The meter should indicate "OL" or high resistance and show steadily decreasing resistance before increasing to OL or high resistance again. Swap probes from the meter on the capacitor leads and "OL or high resistance indication should change to an even lower amount of resistance thas before before returning to "OL" or high resistance indication. These are test result characteristics of a good capacitor under test.

I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply - thanks!

No Power - DOA

Mike,

If there are burn spots on the power board, then it is shot. Go to www.eserviceinfo.com to get a manual, most likely they'll have one there. I service all makes and models of printers, faxes and copiers, they usually have what I am looking for.

Cobra 25LTD Classic internal neg. wire burnt when I hooked up.

COBRA RADIOS HAVE A DIODE THAT WILL BLOW IF HOOKED UP BACKWARDS, THIS IS A BLACK DIODE WITH A SILVER RING ON ONE END OF IT, YOU MAY HAVE TO TAKE IT TO A CB REPAIR SHOP AND HAVE IT REPLACED, HOPEFULLY YOU DID NOT USE OVER A 5 AMP FUSE

first check the inline fuse to see if it is still good. If it is'nt, you can tell by the link in the fuse, will be broken and glass will look burnt. I f fuse is good then you can a schematic drawing of your radio and it will show you wher the resistor or diode that is a back up or safty circut for your radio. google cb radio and you will find many useful sites for repair and mods.

No sound, blue screen with blur of red, an green

the resistor overheated as a result of the diode or the capacitor went bad. Your gonna need to get a schematic diagram and find out what the part #s are as you cant just put in any type of diode capacitor or resistor. Also see what thay voltage source feeds and make sure nothing else is shorted.. Good Luck
