"Lens error - restart camera" message, but won't restart

I tried to start my SX100 with weak batteries, and received a "Lens error, restart camera" message. The lens cover is stuck open about 1/16 inch, and I get the same result with fresh batteries (I tied with 3 different sets, including new lithium batteries). How can I get the camera to start?

I tried to turn the lens, but it is fixed solidly into the camera body and won't turn. I could not work an earlier poster suggestion to pull out the lens, because I see no way to reach inside past the outer shutter to grab the inner movable lens housing,

I appreciate the reply, but I still see no way to open the lens cover. The external shutter blades can be pushed back, but how do you grab the lens, which is deeply recessed, to pull it out???

I just had the same issue when one of my children drop the camera. I'm not wanting to break anyone's camera but I was able to open the lens cover and pull the lens out and then turning it on it retracted and worked just like it should.

when you open the lens you hook just the tips of your fingers inside and pull on the lens housing like when your zooming in on something and the lens is all the way out

When I start my camera I get a message on the screen that says" lens error, restart camera

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

Cannon sx100: displays lens error, restart camera

If your lens received impact damage it will need to be replaced. This is about a $150 bill at Canon. One thing that can happen is the flex cables that attach the lens to the camera system board may have come loose. You will have to have the camera opened by a qualified tech to see if this may be a solution.

Canon SC100 Lens Error

I have a 3 year old Canon PowerShot SX100 IS. While testing an external battery power supply I built, the external power connector pulled out while the lens barrel was extending just after I turned on the camera. Power to the camera was lost before the lens barrel fully extended and wouldn't reset when I repowered the camera. The dreaded error message "Lens error, restart camera" appeared and the camera shut down. I restarted the camera over and over and over again but the lens wouldn't reset. I was extremely lucky to find the information here and read various fixes. I didn't want to take the camera apart so I tried various fixes others have successfully used. I first tried smacking the bottom of the camera hard with the palm of my hand just after pushing the on/off button but that didn't work. The one which worked was smacking the camera on the side immediately after I pushed the on/off button. I smacked it quite hard twice with the palm of my hand then, suddenly, the lens barrel began to move and the lens reset itself back to its starting position. Thanks to everyone who has posted here!

take your finger and slide it inside the lens and pull it out slightly, not all the way but enough that it moves. then hit the power button and it should work fine after that. good luck!
