I also have a Gateway Model GT5694 Desktop computer. When I installed Service Pack 2, my sound no longer works. There is no errors in Device Manager. I currently have a trouble ticket open with Gateway to find out what to do. Has anyone else come across this problem after installing Service Pack 2 for Vista and what did you do to get your sound working again?

In control panel go to sound and audio devices. in this you can test all the audio hardware and mic also.
under voice tab there is also an option for test hardware.
you said that you cannot use the mic in skype or google talk. i think that you didn't configure the mic properties in those software.
just go to start->all programs->accessories->entertainment->sound recording. just record ur voice using mic. if it works then the problem is with the configuration of the software skype and gtalk
hope this helps.
