Big thanks to Oleg Andrukh at PhillyCopiers. This fix worked perfectly for my Brother HL2040.

  • Danny Talpers Sep 27, 2013

I also want to thank Oleg. I found my way here looking to solve a paper jamming problem, made the modification he recommends, and so far it is working! This is after talking to Brother 3 times and (out of warranty) was only told to go to an authorized repair center, of get a new printer. Really appreciate Oleg's fix, and the internet for connecting me

also, as the "separation pad" appears worn, I'm wondering what a suitable, "around the house" replacement might be. Any ideas? thanks

I too have a HL-2040 with sudden paper "feed" (pickup from the paper tray) and I will have to try this "fix". I was ready to buy a "Paper Jam Kit: Brother #LM6291001 for some $20 shipped. Has anyone found a solution for a worn Separation Pad material?

  1. Remove left cover (where the USB connection is located);
  2. Remove big black gear with a spring on it (you may need to unscrew the PCB that partially covers it);
  3. There is a clutch that sticks to the rubber pad behind this gear. You may put a piece of scotch tape towards to a rubber pad, so the plastic from clutch mechanism would'n stick anymore. http://www.phillycopiers.com/fix/hl-2040-2070-fix.jpg

Excellent suggestion. I had replaced the paper feed roller, and it was still doing one piece of paper, then not picking up the next. The tape fix was what I needed. Thanks again!

I had same problem with printing only one piece of paper, placing a piece of scotch tape over the sticky rubber pad solved my problem. Many thanks to Phillycopier.

Thank you so much...the fix worked, and I didn't have to buy anything! It was a bit tricky getting the side cover off, and I was not able to remove the big black gear. Instead I just cut a piece of scotch tape and placed it on the rubber pad with a pair of tweezers. It was very fustrating to keep getting paper jams and to only be able to print one page at a time....thanks again!

Oleg: You are heaven sent! While your entry was over 2 years ago now, it is definitely the gift that keeps on giving. I, like several others went out and purchased the roller assembly only to install it and continue to have the same frustrating problem. Saw your entry and tried the scotch tape trick and Viola! I am back in business. A VERY heartfelt thanks. You do not know how many man hours I had invested up until now. Blessings.CLK.

This worked exceedingly well for me. I had repeated jams starting a few weeks ago from a printer which had worked very well for 4+ years by this point. I didn't think the fix could be this simple. I had a hard time unassembling the cover until I found the drawings/instructions in the "service manual" for the printer on scribd.

I used this fix on a Brother HL5370 that just stopped feeding the paper from the paper tray. I got the left side cover off and put the tape on top of the little rubber pad under the white lever leading to the big white gear. Brother tech support was unable to help. I went months manually feeding paper which was a real pain. This simple fix was a VERY pleasant surprise. Thank you! Thank you ! Thank you!

Thank you SO much! I spent hours trying everything on the Brother site and Google/Bing (cleaning, adjusting paper guides) but nothing else worked. I wrote a feedback email to Brother to suggest adding your fix. I've had the 7820N for 7 years with NO issues - so was sad thinking it had finally died. Cheers, Ken

Thank for this information, it help me fix my printer problem. I have a Brother MFC-7820n getting paper jam error, I replace the Pickup Roller Assembly that I got from precisionroller.com and problem persists. So after reading this post, I completely remove the sticky rubber pad and leave it without any tape, and problem was resolved.

Same as above, put the tape on and printer works. Next step if needed is to remove rubber pad with a razor, I guess, and solvent if sticky surface remains. Many thanks, I was ready to buy a new printer. BE

In Spring 2015 Oleg Andrukh's suggestion above made my printer usable too.

I bought a used Brother MFC-7820N off eBay very inexpensively. But it turned out to jam horribly at least once every page (the jamming is probably why it was so cheap:-). First I cleaned all the rollers (including the pair of small ones inside the front door) with a microfiber cloth and distilled water, then painted them all with rubber restorer. Things improved - they went from "terrible" down to "awful". (I unfortunately couldn't clean the feed rollers all the way around because when they're in the machine they won't rotate.) Next I obtained a service kit (http://www.precisionroller.com/paper-feed-kits-for-brother-mfc-7820n/details_46888.html) and completely replaced all the feed roller parts (many howto videos on Youtube, for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiU45sV5U6o). The procedure, which looked pretty scary to me, turned out to be simple for anyone with even a modicum of mechanical skill. The hardest part was finding the tiny spring that managed to fly out and hit my floor. Unfortunately replacing these parts didn't make hardly any difference.

So I searched again and found the above phillycopiers.com suggestion. Disassembly was easy to understand and perform since I'd already been there once in the process of replacing the feed rollers. I could only see the tiny rubber pad from some angles with the light just right, and so at first I couldn't identify it. But this picture (http://www.phillycopiers.com/fix/hl-2040-2070-fix.jpg) made everything clear. I tried to clean up the existing stickiness a little by dipping a strip of paper towel in rubbing alcohol, then repeatedly sliding it between the clutch cam and the tiny rubber pad, gently almost closing the clutch cam on it, then pulling it out. Then I added a piece of scotch tape to the top side of the tiny rubber pad, sticking to the pad but covering it so nothing else could stick to it.

After reassembly [and discovering it wouldn't work to leave the left cover off, as doing so triggered the "no toner" sensor] the very first page folded up like an accordion and jammed ...but after that _it_worked_. I just printed eight pages with no hint of a jam ...never done anything like that before.

your wheel on one side is impacted with small pieces of paper
this causes the paper flow to go unevenly you need to clean you wheels on both sides oil them and wipe dry with a paper towel
then do the paper feed jam clear and let a few pieces go thru to pick up any remiaining debris

Paper jams when it leave the tray

This printer is new model so probably there is a problem with paper sensor at registration roller or next one paper sensor in fusing unit(it depends where the sheet stops). To be sure please first clean as you can the paper feed roller in tray and also check the manual feeding. If you can feed on bypass tray, then the paper sensors are OK. Look for problem in tray or rubber roller

My HP printer is not feeding paper.

Here is the solution for your problem just go through the steps given below and you can fix it yourself.

1. Check to make sure your printer has paper in its paper tray. If your printer has paper, check to make sure that the tray is not overloaded. If you suspect your paper tray is overloaded, remove some paper from the tray and attempt to print again.

2. Use the same type of paper when stocking the tray with paper; do not mix different types of paper into a single stack. Mixing different brands and weights of paper in a single stack makes your printer more prone to paper feed problems. If you find that one particular type of paper causes consistent feed problems, switching to a different type or weight of paper may solve the problem.

3. Check to make sure the paper in the tray is whole. Torn and creased paper will cause problems with the printer.

4. Open your printer's rear access cover and inspect the paper feed rollers. Dusty or dirty rollers cannot grip the paper; clean them with a soft, damp cloth and water.

5. Count your printer's rollers. HP printers have six paper feed rollers; if your printer is missing rollers the paper will not feed correctly. Contact HP to replace the rollers and repair your printer.

Thanks.

Paper feed jams. feeds from lower tray, turns 180 deg. then jams. Single sheet feed is fine

while keeping the paper .. ensure that it is properly stacked... fan the paper and ensure that it is not stuck to each other.. also open the printer cover and see if any paper is stuck inside..

Try to open the rear access door ,and clean the paper roller with slightly damp lint free cloth

How do I use manual feed on the brother mfc 7820N printer/fax/copier?

The manual feed slot located in the front of the machine above the paper tray.
  1. Slide the gray paper guides to fit the size of the paper
  2. Using both hands put the paper (side to be printed, face up) in the manual feed slot until you feel the front edge of the paper touch the paper feed roller. Let go of the paper when you feel the Brother machine feed the paper in a short distance.
  3. You must then go to the application that you want to print to the paper and use that application's paper settings to set the paper size, orientation, font, style, etc
  4. Good luck trying...

Wipe the paper feed rollers with a clean rag wetted with plain water. You can also replace the feed rollers, search for "paper feeding kit" for this printer. Should be $20 to $30.

Paper doesn't feed from inside on XD 100 work center (10 years old, lightly used). Despite a full paper drawer, I get the "out of paper" error message.  I can copy by feeding through the back.

On this machine, the feed rollers might be worn down.
Not seeing the machine and by the description. there can also be other possible problem areas, deep in the machine itself.
Does the paper feed partially out?
If it does not, are there paper black scuff marks where the rollers were trying to feed the paper.
Can you hear the solenoids feed the paper?
If the paper does feed and seems crooked, it is possible the paper tray springs need to be stretched out just a little to push the paper tray plate more on the feed rollers.
Make sure the tray is completely up in the latched position so the feed wheels will touch the paper stack itself.
If you have a two paper tray, make sure you tell the machine what size paper you have for each tray.
Run paper in each tray.
Good luck.

Paper is in the feed tray, but it continues to say NO Paper??? Brother MFC-8460N any suggestions?

Could be a tab or spring broken off of the feed tray, dirty feed roller can cause that error when paper doesn't feed. Paper guide too tight so that paper can't lift to the feed roller also a possibility. Sensor above paper stack out of position.. many possibilities.

Paper doesn't feed

It could be a few things, but the times I've had similar problems it was either caused by the feed/gripper rollers in the paper trays being worn out, thus not feeding any paper or feeding half a sheet and then jamming.

Or, it could be that the elevator in your paper tray isn't lifting, but if it's taking paper it's probably the rollers.

Paper not feeding

Is this a top feed - that is paper loaded on top at the back bottom feed from a tray underneath? Top feed take one sheet of paper and gently push it down whilst the printer is trying to grab it. Tray feed - take tray out make sure no paper fragments are in the tracks and find a nail board and gently abrade the pick up rollers.
