Question about Kenmore Elite 45986 Front Load Washer
After violently knocking around the tub stopped spining. The belt is still connected to the motor & tub. The pump only growls so all the water must be out. Both bottom shocks are broken off. Will replacing the shocks fix the problem or when violent spinning of towels happens can other components be damaged? I have the top and back off and the only info on the washer is on the front. Heavy Duty Two way & of course Kenmore. This unit is and Energy Star unit purchased 7 to 10 years ago. The service papers with the washer do not show the model number. Is this an attempt to prevent self servicing? This unit is very simple. It should be a snap to fix. What else should I look for. The tub spins easily by hand with just a little expected resistance.
Hi, first things first. Your model and serial numbers should be on a sticker somewhere around the door opening. Next check the tub. With your finger, push up on the rim of the tub then rotate the tub a few inches and push up again. Continue through a whole rotation. If the tub moves and make a clicking noise you have a bad drum bearing and the cost to repair is more than the unit is worth. If that's not an issue, then it's probably just the shocks, replacing them should solve the problem. Hope that helps.

SOURCE: shakes violently during spin
make sure your load is medium to large and mutiple pieces. One large bath mat or towel will cause it not to able to balance the load.
Also there is a service bulletin for excess vibration in these machines.
Read it at servicematters.com tech library, service pointers - Whirlpool Duet Sport and maytag machines (Your Kenmore is made by whirlpool and is a Duet Sport)

I have the same problem as posted on mar 30, 08. seems like the clutch will not engage, the motor turns but the drum won't spin (wash. move). would you give us follow -up instructions for clutch & gear case on how to replace it.

SOURCE: "Shock Absorber" wear?
A lot of people convince themselves that the shock absorbers are causing the problem, but that is rarely the case. if you remove one of them, you will find that they are actually two pieces, and only provide some compression cushioning as the barrel moves around. a little bit of grease might help them a little. Do make sure that they are all connected and positively secured in place, as they sometimes look connected correctly but actually aren't, which can cause problems.
In my experience the problem is that the base, over time, begins to amplify the vibrations of the machine. It is after all, a top-heavy setup. Try putting the machine directly on the floor and see if that does the trick (get help, it's heavy)
