Question about Computers & Internet

Open Question

My sony vaio notebook wont connect to the internet, but it can see and browse other PCs on my home network. When I try to connect to the web, the browser times out. I am running Win XP with the latest updates. I am using Explorer 7. This is a Windows problem, not a Vaio problem. I tried repairing the network connection and clearing the arp cache as suggested on Microsoft's knowledge base. Still no good. The problem's appearance does not appear to be tied to the installation of any new software. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You can try a few things, sometimes my laptop does this.

1.Bring up the start menu and type "cmd.exe" into the search box and press enter when it has found it.

In this window, type "ipconfig /release". Wait for it to run through and then type "ipconfig /renew". The second part can take a while depending on your network configuration. You can close this black window now and try the internet again.

2. If this doesn't work, try rebooting the computer (turning it off, then back on again).

If you still don't have any luck, contact me via my profile and we'll find a way to fix your computer.

So, your "wireless" works at home,
but your "wireless" does *NOT* work anywhere else?

That's not a "hardware" problem -- you just have to open the "Network Connections" folder, and "Find Available Networks", select one, and connect to it.

Find somebody with a laptop at a "hot-spot", buy them a coffee, and ask them to help setup your computer.

That seems to be a normal result (Lack of intenet access) if you are pulling down torrents if your router is configured as DHCP. UTorrent recommends static IP addressing to optimise the application.

You can restore your connectivity by closing the uTorrent application by right-clicking the icon in the taskbar and exiting the program completely.

Wireless network connection

you may need to run the network wizard, as your sony may not be set up as using a gateway type connection and may be instructing other pcs to connect via itself and not on the network.
