The following three conditions should be met for you to use this charger safely.

1) Output Voltage is within +/- 5% of your old charger's output.
For example, if your old charger provides 19.5V, then you can use a charger that provides 20.5V or 18.5V.
2) Output Current is the same or higher than that of your old charger.
For example, if your original adapter provides 3.42 Amps, then you can use a charger that provides 3.42 Amps, 3.9 Amps or higher.
3) Connector tip must fit securely into your laptop.
So it would do no harm to your laptop with a 19V 4.74a adapter working on hp dv5000.

As you have found... half a volt at that amerage should be just fine...

If it helps, I just bought an aftermarket replacement of the correct voltage and amperage for my nx9010 from eBay for $15AU delivered. It'd probably help when it comes time to sell your laptop =-]

Fault with main board. Contact any service technician; or the authorized service center. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ . In most cases, the main board might have to be replaced. If so, a software [firmware] update too will be necessary.

Does the power supply unit produce 19volts? If it does, you may have an issue with the motherboard that will require specialist repair. If the power supply doesn't produce power, replace it. If you can find a friend who has a battery that fits, worth fitting it to check the charger and motherboard.

Power supply has a continues blink instead of a solid led light.

HP skimps on power supplies, using a supply that has only a small margin of excess power. This causes the supplies to run under stress too often.
Make sure any replacement supply has the correct physical configuration for your system and replace it with one that is capable of 50% more power than the original rating; the cost difference is likely to be minimal and in any case lower than an 'original HP' unit of the same power rating that has now failed.
It is possible that a failed mother board or hard drive is causing your problem but you are risking well under $50 (for an ~400 watt supply) and will be getting a superior unit. eBay is a good source and you can seek a replacement using the Pavilion series name and then checking for your particular model number.

Battery with HP Pavillion DV5000 won't work. Do I need to replace the battery or is there a battery charger I could use to recharge the battery? Dianne

You can order a power cable online or pick one up at your local computer store. They should run between $80-150. The battery itself is very expensive to purchase but is rechargeable.

2 yr old toshiba satellite laptop. Original power adapter stopped working. Replaced with a Targus I got at Walmart. Was wondering if this could cause problems. Thank you

As long as the output voltage from the power supply is the same as what your laptop needs your good to go, but, also check the output "amps" you need the amps rating to be the same or more on the power supply. The laptop will only draw the amps it needs so if the power supply amps rating is higher no problem, but if the power supply amps rating is lower it could cause the power supply to over heat and maybe die on you.
If you are unsure please check with someone familiar with electrical ratings.

Hp flat screen monitor

It's probably your dc power supply.

Mine would blank just 2-3 seconds after power-on.
I pulled this monitor out of the garbage - someone threw it away. I found any old 12vdc power supply I had laying around (1 from an hp scaner 1250mA, another rated at 600mA) neither could supply the current (amps) required to run the backlights, therefore backlights shutdown, monitor goes blank--monitor stilled powered on, but black.

I tried all of the disassembly, re-solder various solder joints on the LCD Inverter board and removing the heat/magnetic shield from inside the back cover of the monitor. Nothing worked.

I bought a Segate 80gb external hard disk drive that came with a 12vdc power supply, looks like a typical laptop power supply, rated at 3A (3000mA). Plugged it to the monitor, it powered up, and it works flawlessly.
