Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I am unable to connect to the router using my ethernet cable. I am able to connect wirelessly. The other computers in my apartment can connect using ethernet or wireless. I did check driver/network adapter and its fine. I copied WNS server and it appeared connected but can't get on internet. It does not seem to be a problem with Dell Hardware and I can't figure out what Windows setting is off. Any ideas?

Any chance the problem is with your cable?  if the device manager has the device listed and the driver is up to date (or even not showing problems)...
sorry for the obvious, but it has to be checked.  good luck.

> excellent connectivity

This refers to the wireless connection between your computer & your router, not to the connection from your cable-modem (or DSL-modem) out through your ISP to the Internet.

If you use an Ethernet cable to connect your computer directly to the cable/DSL modem, do you still have "intermittent" problems?
If so, then your router (or other wireless devices, such as your neighbours' router, or your neighbours' wireless telephones that are trying to operate on the same broadcast frequency) is the problem.

Modem <-- Ethernet cable --> WAN port on router

LAN port #1 on router <--- Ethernet cable --> network-port on desktop computer

LAN port #2 on router <-- Ethernet cable --> network-port on laptop computer

If the router has built-in "wireless" capability, then use the desktop computer's connection to the router to "configure" the wireless adapter, i.e., pick an SSID, and establish a password, and then your laptop computer can use the SSID/password to connect "wirelessly" to the router.

Is there any computer connected to the router ?
If not then you will need to connect the computer
to the router.
Do not change any wireless settings on the router
with the wireless computer.
you will need to connect the computer to the
router with the Ethernet cable.
check the IP address of the computer.
open the router set up page of the router.
Here you can change the wireless settings of the
router.
Now once you change the network anme and security
on the router, you will need to connect to the

Why do you require a wireless connection on the computer, when it is already connected to the router through ethernet cable? Disable the wireless connection permanently & try.

Unable to connect Linksys wireless router to my arris cm450a

All routers will only work with ethernet. You would need to get an ethernet card installed in your computer. You can probably buy one for about 20.00 at Walmart. If you don't want to do this you can purchase a usb/ethernet adapter and still use the usb port on your computer. You can purchase one of these for around 5.00's on ebay. Just go to ebay and search for usb/ethernet adapter. Please rate if this has helped. Thanks.

Does a router or combo need to be connected to computer?

As you already have the modem you only need a router. In all cases the modem connects to the WAN port on the router.

I think your best bet surely would be to go for a wireless router though? Then you wouldnt have to trail ethernet cables all round the house. I'm sure your laptop has a wireless adaptor built in unless it;s very old.

I always use Netgear networking stuff so forgive me posting a link to a nice 54G wireless router :-) :
