Question about Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) Console

1 Answer

Playstation 2 with no audio.

I have an older playstation2 (5001) and it does not have any sound out at all. It plays all games no problem, just no sound. I bought a new AV cable and still no sound. I opened the console and found it severly rusted on one side of the shielding and on the AV connector. I cleaned up the shielding and gounds on the mainboard. Being a certified electronics technican, I unsoldered the the Optical jack (have to get the AV jack off) and the AV jack and cleaned the grounds and internal pins. Resolded all jacks back on and reassembled console and still have no audio. If I knew the pin out of the AV jack, I would be able to see if it audio is getting to the jack using an O'scope. It is most likely the jack and was wondering if any one might know what the part number for the AV jack would be. I can get the part, but I need to know what the part number is. Here is a site that has just any part for any electronic item, http://www.partstore.com/. Just put in the manufacture and model number of equipment (say a Playstation 2) and any and all parts will come up. Unfortunately, its all listed by part number with really vague distriptions. So, if anyone can help with the part number, that would be great! Thanks for taking the time to read the novel I just posted.

Just to let you know, I used a multimeter and ohmed the AV jack and it was good. What I really need is a schematic of the main board or the pin out of the AV jack to start looking for the audio signal. Thanks again.

OOOPS! I have a 3001 series console not a 5001. Stupid fat fingers!

Thanks for the help. I'm going to replace the motherboard. Found a place to get a new one for about $50-$60.http://store.richspsxparts.com/index.htm...

I also think that the motherboard has been replaced once because the board model is GH-019 with matching KHS-400C laser(version 7) and the housing model is SCPH-30001 date code 1B(version 4). HHHMMM, kind of strange. Anyway thanks for the info.

Hi, Im a game console repairer by trade, Had a look at the parts numbers lsit for you but none match to the AV jack your after. Your best solution would be to source another dead 50001 with another problem such as a laser problem or similar from somewhere like Ebay and unsolder that AV jack or just swap out the motherboard completely, Sony have never been up to speed in supplying parts so used parts are really your only option.

Think replacement of the motherboard is your best option, The outer case sounds like it could have been swapped as the mohterboard and laser are a match, Possibly the previous case may have been dropped?

Do you play Playstation 1 game on Playstation 3?

If that is the case.. the manufacture of Playstation 3 have stop installing compability software to play a previous game on their new console.. so Playstation 2 or 1 game are not able to play on PS3..

No surround sound, when playing blue ray films using ps3

Hi there,

Im guessing you are using a HDMI cable,

HDMI cables struggle to carry audio...

you will need a componet cable, this is basicly the same quality, and all you do is plug the audio cable part into the surround sound system and done.

Hope this helps

You're stuck not being able to play, you need to get the slim PS2's because they reconverted the discs for a new disc encoding.
